Steve Roush Steps Down as ASCA CEO; National Search Open Immediately

The American Swimming Coaches Association (ASCA) has announced the departure of Chief Executive Officer Steve Roush to pursue other personal interests.

ASCA Board President Mike Kolebar commented,

“Steve has done a tremendous job in these challenging and uncertain times of 2020. He has pledged his ongoing support to the organization and will be a crucial resource for incoming administration in continuing to forge the forward path of the ASCA.”

Steve Roush stated,

“It is with extreme sadness that I announce my resignation as Chief Executive Officer of The ASCA effective October 15. I came to the ASCA with enthusiasm to make it the model of coaches’ associations around the world. Due to the impact of COVID-19 on the organization related to revenue generation and operations, I feel it is imperative that I step down due to both personal and professional reasons.

“I believe that the ASCA can come out of the pandemic as a strong viable organization and I will support my successor in the transition as well as in the future. I am forever grateful to the ASCA Board and staff for their support during my brief tenure.”

Steve Roush was hired at ASCA in July 2019, succeeding John Leonard who had held the position for 35 years.

According to the Associated Press, Roush was widely considered one of the most active advocates of athletes in the American Olympic movement when he was with the United States Olympic Committee. In the six years leading to the Beijing Olympics, he made more than two dozen trips to China to ensure optimal conditions – everything from living quarters, to the food they ate, to their training facilities.

Before coming to the USOC, Roush was a top executive at USA Swimming for six years, and before that had been an assistant swim coach at Northwestern and Wisconsin.

A national search for new leadership at ASCA has commenced and interested parties can apply here as the deadline is September 15.
