Aqua Centurions swimmer Stefania Pirozzi is in quarantine at home in Italy after announcing she has tested positive for Covid-19.

Pirozzi, who won gold as part of the Italian women’s 4×200 quartet at the 2014 European Championships, has not travelled to season 2 of the International Swimming League in Budapest, Hungary, although she hopes to participate in the later rounds of the five-week competition.

She is the second swimmer to have tested positive for coronavirus after Femke Heemskerk, of last year’s winners Energy Standard, announced on Sunday that she too had done so.

In a post on social media, Pirozzi said:

“Unfortunately, I recently tested positive to Covid-19;

“It was a shock for me because I’ve always been very careful but luckily I am fine and I have no symptoms; I’m following the rules and I’m in quarantine at home.

“I hope I will be able to join @iswimleague with my team @isl_aquacenturions when it will be possible again.
#quarantine”

According to the ISL rules,  participants are required to take two COVID-19 tests at least 48 hours apart, within five days of their departure for Budapest.

Pirozzi will now have to take two follow-up tests to rule out a possible false positive. If further tests are positive, she will then have to quarantine for 14 days before heading to Budapest, according to the ISL protocols.

Time to shutdown competition. Risks are too great.

football, baseball and basketball all got to play their seasons. Were there positives? Yes. Were they critically ill? No. In swim, they’re in bleach water, and social distancing in the lanes on a normal day. Let them swim
