The St. Xavier AquaBombers, Swimming World‘s 2017 National High School Champions, have won the NISCA National Dual Meet Competition for the fourth consecutive year.

The Award Program ranks the top high school teams in the country by different classes – Teams compile their strongest dual meet lineup based on times from any official, regularly scheduled high school meet that season. Each swim earns NISCA Power Points that are tallied to provide overall rankings.

St. Xavier won the boys’ race by 157 points over Carmel (IN) while Santa Margarita Catholic (CA) claimed both the girls’ and overall team awards. Full results from the 2018 contest can be found here.

For the fourth consecutive year the St. Xavier Swimming & Diving team finished on top of the
National Interscholastic Swimming Coaches Association National dual meet rankings. It marks
the tenth overall NISCA crown for St. X and the “four-peat” is the first by any boys school in at
least the last twenty years. Previous wins were recorded in 1999, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2007, 2008,
2015, 2016 and 2017.

The Long Blue Lane racked up a records 6529 points to outdistance Carmel (IN) – 6372, North
Allegheny (PA), Regis Jesuit (CO) – 6065 and Southlake Carroll (TX) – 6064.

“We are so pleased and gratified that our guys stepped up, meet after meet, to accomplish
something very special for the program. This Championship defines quality depth and in our
case a tremendous amount of focus, determination and commitment by the athletes, coaches and
families involved. When you look at the list of heavy hitter teams from around the country who
are factors in the NISCA results, it further highlights the achievement,” noted head coach Tim
Beerman.

The AquaBombers captured an Ohio record 39th State Championship in February. The margin of
victory was the largest in Ohio boys swimming and diving history. St. X placed first in five
events and picked up an additional five runner-ups to headline the scoring. St. Xavier is
currently tied with Lakewood St. Edward with 56 overall Ohio Team State Championships.

All-Americans Pace St. Xavier Swimming and Diving

All American honors were also presented by NISCA . Nine team members were part of this elite group. The “Men in Blue” had at least one representative in all eleven swimming events. Six of the nine were “first timers”:

Nicholas Czepukaitis (SR) 200 Free, 400 Free Relay
Sam Fallon (SR) 200 Free, 500 Free
Ansel Froass (SO) 200 IM, 200 Free Relay
Justin Grender (SR) 200 Medley Relay, 200 Free, 200 IM, 50 Free, 100 Free, 200 Free Relay, 100 Back,400 Free Relay
Jean-Pierre Khouzam (SO) 200 Medley Relay, 200 Free, 100 Fly, 400 Free Relay
Will Osterman (SR) 500 Free
Nicholas Perera (SR) 200 Free, 200 IM, 500 Free, 200 Free Relay, 400 Free Relay
Scott Sobolewski (SO) 200 Medley Relay, 100 Breast
Alex Wade (SR) 200 Medley Relay, 200 Free Relay

“This is an impressive list indeed, especially when you consider how challenging the time standards have become.  High school swimming has become so fast. Watching this group and their teammates improve so dramatically certainly adds to the accomplishment,” added coach Tom Keefe.

In addition, eighteen seniors garnered Academic All-American status: Teddy Bayer, Carter Creviston, Nicholas Czepukaitis,Luke DiGiacomo, Carter Dwyer, Sam Fallon, Justin Grender, Erich Guenther, Sean Hergenrother, Scott Holcomb, Josh Knapke, William Lopez, Nicholas Perera, Nicholas Pfeifer, Luke Prather, Robert Prophater, Brian Robertson, Alex Wade.

“When you look at this list it is obvious that student and athlete go hand in hand in a very demanding
curriculum and sport,” summarized long time coach and teacher Jim Brower.

To my knowledge Lakewood St. Edward has never won an Ohio State Team Championship.

I think they mean in all sports combined. They have won a ton of wrestling championships.

Good point Chris, you are probably correct.

But it does bring up the issue of two parochial schools leading the count. Why do we seem always to lump public schools with limited school district boundaries with parochial schools that are albe to recruit and attract students from virtually anywhere, even from other states? So St. Xavier has won 39 state swimming meets and this is quite an accomplishment but they have a huge advantage as did St, Edwards in wrestling.

They mean overall Ohio championships. They count all the sports.
