Shaine Casas Explodes to Third All-Time in 100 Back at Art Adamson Invite

Third place all-time seems to be a popular move this weekend. Texas A&M junior Shaine Casas, nearly 24 hours after becoming the third fastest performer in history in the 200 IM, moved to the exact same spot in the 100 backstroke all-time rankings with a 43.87, becoming the third fastest performer in history as well as the fourth man to break 44 seconds in the event. Ryan Murphy still holds the American record from 2016 with a 43.49.

Casas improved on his best time of 44.40 from earlier this year where he sat tenth all-time.

Shaine Casas also led off Texas A&M’s 200 medley relay team with a 20.82 as the Aggies won going away with a 1:24.21 with the team of Casas (20.82), Tanner Olson (23.09), Jace Brown (20.94) and Mark Theall (19.36).

Senior Theall won the 200 freestyle with a 1:32.98 ahead of teammate Coco Bratanov (1:33.70) and last year’s 100 free SEC champ Brooks Curry (1:33.75). Theall also swam on the 800 free relay team with a 1:33.99 lead-off leg as the Aggies won at 6:21.18 with Clayton Bobo (1:36.65), Bratanov (1:34.63) and Elijah Sohn (1:35.91).

A&M won all the men’s events on the night as Tanner Olson broke the school record in the 100 breaststroke with a 51.39 ahead of Andres Puente Bustamante (52.38) while the latter won the 400 IM at 3:45.46 ahead of Vincent Ribeiro (3:46.83).

Jace Brown took the 100 fly (47.54) while freshman Kraig Bray was second (47.97).

On the women’s side, Texas A&M nearly won every individual event but LSU got a win from Emilie Boll in the 100 breaststroke at 1:00.57.

The Aggies did start the day with a win in the medley relay at 1:39.13 with the team of Emma Carlton (25.25), Kylie Powers (28.26), Olivia Theall (23.87) and Chloe Stepanek (21.75). Stepanek picked up another win on the night in the 200 freestyle with a 1:44.40 and returned later in the night to anchor the winning 800 free relay at 1:47.10 where the Aggies won at 7:11.00. Haley Yelle (1:48.99), Jing Quah (1:46.44) and Camryn Toney (1:48.47) gave Stepanek the clean water to capture her seventh win on the weekend.

Quah took the 400 IM win at 4:09.09 while teammate Carlton won the 100 back at 53.56, ahead of Stepanek at 53.96. Senior Taylor Pike also won the 100 butterfly at 53.16.
