Seven state records fell on Monday at the NCISAA 3A State Championships at the Greensboro Aquatic Center in Greensboro, NC, with Charlotte Latin School claiming the boys title and Cary Academy winning the girls title.

It was the sixth straight championship title for the Charlotte Latin boys, who finished with 398 point, easily ahead of Cary Academy (300 points) and Asheville School (214 points). The Cary Academy girls claimed their second straight 3A team title in equally dominant fashion, accumulating 349 points, with Charlotte Latin School finishing in second (237 points) and St. Mary’s School in third (216 points).

Girls

Cary Academy’s depth proved to be decisive, as it won only one event of the meet on the girls’ side, claiming gold in the 200 Medley Relay when Nisma Said, Amy Chang, Charlotte Hook, and Helen Chen combined for a 1:48.7. Saint Mary’s School (Bowen Gordon, Abby Arens, Caroline Crouse, Naomi Thombs) earned the silver in 1:51.18 and Covenant Day School (Sophie Lindner, Dylan Gentner, Lawson Brantley, Susanna Schoeck) rounded out the podium in a 1:51.65.

Ravenscroft School’s Mary Pruden earned the first individual gold of the night, winning the 200 free in an automatic All American time of 1:48.79. Pruden’s swim broke the 3A state and meet records set by Olympian Kathleen Baker in 2012. Charlotte Latin’s Amy Dragelin was also almost under Baker’s old record, finishing second in an All-American consideration time of 1:49.53. Abby Kriegler of Asheville School took third (1:52.83).

Arens of Saint Mary’s School staked claim to the top spot in the 200 IM, taking home the title for the second year in a row with a 2:02.51, followed by Cary Academy’s Hook (2:05.37) and Southlake’s Sarah Barton (2:06.47).

Charlotte Country Day junior Sophie Francis won the girls 50 free (23.78) in a closely contested race with Charlotte Latin’s Lindsay Flynn (23.87) and Alexandra White of Wesleyan Christian Academy (23.92).

A second girls’ record fell in the 100 fly when Covenant Day School’s Lindner stopped the clock at 54.97. Her time broke the previous state and meet records of 55.26 set in 2016 by Ravenscroft’s Madeline High and earned her All-American consideration. Cary’s Hook picking up a second silver in 57.40, joined on the podium by teammate Said (59.40).

Dragelin prevailed by the narrowest of margins in the 100 free, coming from behind to hit the wall in 51.19 ahead of Charlotte Country Day’s Francis (51.20). They were followed by Latin’s Lindsay Flynn who earned the bronze medal with a 51.81.

Pruden, a Columbia commit, claimed her second individual title of the night in the 500 free, stopping the clock in a 4:52.57. That time surpassed the state and meet records of 4:52.92 set in 1996 and qualified for All-American consideration. Kriegler was second in 4:57.98 with South Lake Christian’s Morgan Razewski finishing third just above the 5:00 barrier in a 5:00.08.

Latin’s sprint squad scared the state record of 1:37.14 with their swim of 1:37.38. With all four (Flynn, Flynn, Simpson, and Dragelin) returning next year, that record should be on watch in 2019. The Latin girls were joined on the podium by Cary Academy’s Elena Zayas, Barnette, Emma Zayas, and Hook (1:38.69) and Ravenscroft’s Grace Bergstrom, Nora Bergstrom, Kaitlin Ramsden, and Pruden (1:38.99).

Lindner earned a second gold in the 100 back. Her time of 55.49 in the was fast enough for All-American consideration. Second place went to Southlake’s Razewski who finished in a 56.20, also qualifying for All-American consideration. Greensboro Day School’s Morgan Jones claimed third with a 56.52.

Sophomore Arens dropped an impressive 1:01.40 to lower the 100 breast record of 1:02.19 that she established as a freshman in 2017 and earn Automatic All-American status. Rachel Lee of Charlotte Christian School was second in 1:05.31, while Cary Academy put another swimmer on the podium with Chang picking up the bronze with a 1:07.79.

In the meet’s final event, Charlotte Latin’s girls 400 free relay team of Flynn, Peters, Flynn and Dragelin (50.64 split) broke the state and meet record (set in 2017 by Ravenscroft) with a time of 3:29.85, also worthy of All-American consideration. They were joined on the podium by Ravenscroft (Bergstrom, Bergstrom, Ramsden, Pruden–3:35.50) and Cary Academy (Chen, Zayas, Said, and Barnette–3:36.82).

Boys

Charlotte Latin boys stood atop the podium in five individual events and two relays, but the opening relay gold was claimed by Forsyth Country Day School (Nathan Jao, Steven Insixiengmay, Mclain Ralston, Daniel Snyden–1:40.84), who finished just ahead of Charlotte Latin (Andy Dorsel, Evan Dorsel, Connor Neely, Ethan Bershad–1:41.40), with the bronze going to Cannon School’s Hayes Leatherman, Kyle Barone, Jacob Lafferty, and Peyton Skill (1:44.40).

Charlotte Latin senior Sam Mahoney claimed the first of his two individual titles in the 200 free (1:44.95), with Ravenscroft senior Matthew Youngbar in second (1:46.19) and Connor Smith of Asheville School taking the third spot on the podium (1:49.27).

The 200 IM featured a race among the underclassmen—with six of the eight finalists either eighth graders or freshmen. Freshman Stephen Kim of Charlotte Latin emerged on top with a 1:56.47, followed by teammate Dorsel (1:56.47) and eighth grader Jao of Forsyth Country Day (1:58.91).

Cary Academy claimed its only individual win of the evening when Ben Humphries got to the wall first in the 50 free (21.79), narrowly out touching Senior Nathan Alleyne of Asheville School (21.83) and Cary teammate Josh Pullen who claimed third (22.27).

Cannon School’s Barone broke the first boys record of the evening with a winning time of 48.60 in the 100 butterfly, eclipsing the previous record of 49.58 set by Ikenna Eruchalu in 2016 by almost a full second. That time also earned him All-American status. Charlotte Latin’s Dorsel picked up the silver with a 52.20, while Jao claimed his second bronze of the night with a 52.81.

Latin got another individual title when Jackson Davis stopped the clock at 47.87 in the 100 free, with Asheville’s Alleyne earning his second silver of the night in 48.15, and Tyler Sherrill taking the third spot on the podium in 48.46.

Latin’s Mahoney earned his second individual gold with a 4:48.29 in the 500 free, followed once again by Youngbar (4:49.92), with Cary’s Jack Todd in third (4:5.75).

In the 200 free relay Latin won in (Davis, Kim, Egan, Mahoney) 1:28.36. Cary (Will Newman, Vincent Wang, Humphries, Pullen) was second with a 1:28.43 and Cannon (Alex Coale, Hampton Dickens, Skill, Barone (who split a 20.90)) finished third in 1:29.07.

Barone won the 100 backstroke in 50.13, this time just barely surpassing the previous state record of 50.15 set by Collin Higgins in 2010, and once again fast enough for All-American consideration. He was joined on the podium by Latin teammates Davis (53.33) and Dorsel (56.37).

Charlotte Latin claimed the top two spots in the 100 breaststroke. Kim earned the gold (58.25), finishing just ahead of teammate Egan (58.42) in a tightly contested race, followed by Ravenscroft’s Bode Ringenbach in third (59.95).

Fittingly, the final race of the night for the boys was claimed by the Latin quad of Davis, Egan, Kim, and Mahoney (3:18.21). Second place went to Cary Academy (Wang, Josh Pullen, Jack Todd, Humphries–3:19.23), and third to Providence Day School (John Howard, Nick Cooley, Hayden Clay–3:23.55).
