Ryan Lochte has joined the Global Swim Series as part of its new “Race the Legends” format. The program allows swimmers worldwide to race, virtually and in person, against some of the top swimmers at GSS open-water races.

Lochte is the first legend to sign up for the venture. The second-most decorated Olympian in history, Lochte has 12 Olympic medals to his name, including six golds. He’s won 39 world championships and 91 major international medals, a tally he will look to add to by vying for his fifth Olympics this month at U.S. Olympic Trials.

“The goal of the GSS is to promote and grow swimming around the world. This is done by offering a fun, healthy, competitive, and adventurous race experience for swimmers of all ages and abilities. Ryan is the perfect swimmer and personality to exemplify competitive, fun, and adventurous swimming.”

The Global Swim Series has hosted more than 200 open-water races since starting in 2015, visiting more than 35 countries and signing up more than 100,000 participants. The “Race the Legends” series adds a way to participate, by collecting GSS points in specified races to be able to swim against legends. Registration for the first GSS Virtual Race the Legends event is open now.

“We are so excited to kick off our seventh season with an announcement of this magnitude,” GSS CEO and founder Robert Kent said in a press release. “It is a good day when one of the greatest swimmers of all time joins your team. And having Ryan kick off ‘Race The Legends’ will be incredible. It is a dream for all of us at GSS and will be a thrill for swimmers around the world.”

Swimmers can also qualify for various prizes, including signed memorabilia or chances to meet the legends.

“There has never been anything like this in any sport,” Kent said. “But in swimming, the Legends are out there, and they deserve the publicity and recognition that other sports legends get, and we want to give it to them. All while thrilling the swimmers beyond belief. People do truly crave life experiences and I can think of nothing better than this for a swimmer!”
