Ryan Lochte, Chasing Fifth Olympic Bid, the Subject of Sports Illustrated Feature

Ryan Lochte has long been a top draw in the sport, his fans equally eager to follow his exploits in the pool and out of the water. Now, as a 36-year-old seeking a berth to fifth Olympic Games, Lochte is the subject of a feature story in the latest issue of Sports Illustrated. The piece, Ryan Lochte’s Last Try, focuses on Lochte’s chase for a spot on the United States squad that will race at this summer’s Olympics in Tokyo.

Written by Brian Burnsed, the piece focuses on Lochte’s pursuit of the past form that made him a 12-time Olympic medalist, along with mistakes he has made during his life. The article takes a look at the Rio Gas Station incident that marred Lochte’s participation in the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro and led to a suspension by USA Swimming. When the United States Olympic Trials are held in June in Omaha, Lochte will be one of the top attractions, his storyline a simple one: Can the veteran put together a final hurrah at an age where most athletes in his sport are retired.

Lochte’s best chance to qualify for the Tokyo Games will be in the 200-meter individual medley, an event in which Lochte has won four world championships and claimed three Olympic medals.
