Ross Report Episode #4: Robert Howard Staying Relaxed, Having Fun in Last Year at Alabama

Swimming World presents the video series called the Ross Report. It will be a weekly series where our head video producer Andy Ross will travel around the country to tell the stories of the swimmers and divers you don’t know much about.

On this week’s episode, Ross travelled to St. Andrews School in Boca Raton, Florida, where the University of Alabama team was training for winter break before Christmas.

Ross caught up with senior sprinter Robert Howard, who is currently ranked second in the nation in the 100 free and fifth in the 50 free at the halfway point of the season.

Howard will also represent the United States at the World University Games in Italy this summer. It is a dream come true for Howard, as he originally wanted to make the same World University Games team in the summer of 2017, but did not have a good meet at the World Trials in Indianapolis that summer.

Howard originally wanted to lay low the rest of the summer, but his coach Jonty Skinner insisted he not run away from his failures, instead facing it head on. Howard kept on training for the US Open at the end of that summer, and with no expectations, he dropped two new best times at the meet.

Since that meet, Howard has kept that same relaxed attitude in to his senior year for the Crimson Tide, where he has a chance to win an individual national title for Alabama. Howard always dreamed of swimming for Alabama as he has gone to football games with his dad since 2005.

Howard also gave his thoughts on Alabama’s chances at a national championship in football this season. The Crimson Tide will take on Clemson tonight and are looking for back-to-back titles and their third in four years.
