Rosary Wins Third Straight Illinois HS Girls State Title

Rosary won the 2017 Illinois Girls High School Swimming State Championships for the third straight year with 169 points. Oswego East totaled 138.5 points for runner up honors while St. Charles North scored 108 points for third.

Rosary led from the get go. The 200 medley relay of Athena YeIzzy PytelCamryn Streid, and Emily Ryan finished in 1:43.15. Touching second in 1:43.67 were St. Charles North’s Audrey GuyettRachel PonteMallory Jump, and Julianna EngesserGrace Ariola (split a 24.45), Julia OostmanJulia Heimstead, and Ashley Bengtson were third for Normal Community HS in 1:44.17.

The 200 freestyle ended in a tie. Oswego East senior Georgia White led at the 100 and the 150. Normal West’s Melissa Pish, who will head to Duke next fall, powered home in 27.55 to hit the wall at 1:47.13, in unison with White. Rosary’s Anne Tavierne placed third with a 1:49.52.

Pish earned another gold and didn’t share it. She posted a 4:49.25 to win the 500 free. The Lyons’ Callahan Dunn (4:53.09) and St. Charles North’s Guyett (4:54.89) earned silver and bronze.

Urbana’s Ema Rajic, a Cal commit, raced to a 2:00.74 for the 200 IM victory. Annika Wagner was runner up with a 2:01.30, just ahead of Crystal Lake’s Valerie Tazari (2:01.52). Rajic also topped the 100 breaststroke in 1:01.35. Tarazi was second there in 1:02.20, just ahead of Indiana commit and Metamora senior Noelle Peplowski (1:02.30).

Texas commit Ariola posted a 22.52 to win the 50 freestyle, not far ahead of Oswego East’s Grace Cooper (22.67). Oak Park’s Natalie Ungaretti (23.06) earned bronze. Ariola’s second win of the day came in the 100 backstroke when her 53.29 was over a half second faster than Loyola’s Shannon Kearney (53.90). Fenwick’s Brooker West (55.36) finished third.

New Trier earned first and second on the boards as Jessie Creed (479.10) and Katie Lipsey (436.50) took home gold and silver.

Dunlap senior and Northwestern commit Emma Theobald won the 100 back in 54.61 ahead of Normal Community’s Heimstead (55.05) and Rosary’s Streid, a Cincinnati Bearcats commit.

Oswego East racked up points in the 100 freestyle. Sophomore Cooper touched the wall in 49.91 followed by her senior teammate White in 50.01. Kate Morris, a freshman from Glenbard was third with a 50.33, just out touching Ungaretti (50.34).

The 200 freestyle relay resulted in another fast race. Cooper, White, Mari Kraus, and Emily Giles combined for a 1:33.58 for Oswego East. Rosary’s Ye, Ryan, Tavierne, and Kathryn Mueller were .08 behind with a 1:33.66. Rounding out the podium were Tiffanie RuanKristen StegeRachel Stege, and Megan Ciezczak (1:33.90) for Neuqua Valley.

Oswego East won another relay, this one by a solid margin as Cooper, Kraus, Giles, and White touched in 3:22.48 for 400 freestyle relay gold. Ariola, Claire Koh, Bengtson, and Heimstead were second for Normal Community in 3:25.51. Rosary wrapped up the top three with a 3:26.08 from Tavierne, Ryan, Linda Licari, and Mueller.
