Rock Bridge Takes Missouri Class 2 State Title In Meet Decided By Final Relay

On Friday afternoon Central Cape Girardeau won the Missouri Boys Class 1 State Championships. At the Class 2 meet on Saturday Rock Bridge took home the state title with 243 points in a meet decided by the final relay. St. Louis University High finished second, just behind, with 237 and Lee’s Summit North scored 221 points to earn third place.

At the start of the meet Lee’s Summit North raced to a 200 medley relay victory in 1:34.96 with the team of Grant GodardDaniel WorthLance Godard, and Liam Bresette. St. Louis University High’s Barclay DaleJoe HellinekMathias Hostetler, and Nick Mattingly were second (1:36.70).

Bresette, an Arizona State commit, touched first in the 200 free in 1:37.04. He and Rock Bridge’s Dane Florea (1:38.38) were well ahead of the field. Bresette also ran away with the 100 free (44.56). Florea later won an event- the 500 free in 4:27.72. Fort Zumwait West’s Adam Grimm was second (4:34.17) and Holt junior Noah Scheuermann (4:39.92) completed that top three.

Kirkwood senior Jack Weaver won the 200 IM (1:50.50). Rock Bridge got another silver from Zach Lorson with his 1:52.01, out touching Grimm (1:52.05). Weaver won again, clearing 50 in the 100 back with a 49.72. Dale (50.49) finished second.

It was a tight top heat in the 50 free. Liberty’s Noah Witzki won the event in 21.40. Within the next .05 were Dale (21.44) and Marquette’s Joe Lemon (21.45). Witzki stepped up in the very next event and dominated the 100 fly. The junior stopped the clock in 49.85.

Rock Bridge raced ahead of the pack in the 200 freestyle relay. In 1:26.48 Florea, Weston BetzOakley Lorson, and Ryan Gilbert secured gold. Florea led off in a 21.05, a new Class 2 State Record. The team’s time was also a state record.

Three swimmers entered the 57 second range in the 100 breast. First to the wall was Lee’s Summit North freshman Worth in 57.07, out touching Lee’s Summit senior Andy Huffman (57.10). Coming in third was Zach Lorson (57.72).

The order of finish in the last relay was the same as in the top three overall teams. Heading into the final relay Rock Bridge and St. Louis University High were tied. Rock Bridge swept the freestyle relays, hitting the wall in 3:09.24 with the team of Florea, Connor Jokerst, Gilbert, and Zach Lorson. Runner up came down to a close finish. St. Louis University High’s Joan Burke, Mattingly, Dale, and Joseph Feder put together a 3:11.49 to just beat Lee’s Summit North’s Lance Godard, Jonathan Thomas, Grant Godard, and Bresette (3:11.51).
