On the final night of swimming competition at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games, Gregory Paltrinieri of Italy and Pernille Blume of Denmark each won their first Olympic gold medal in their respective events. Blume took the 50 freestyle while Paltrinieri claimed the 1500. Countryman Gabrielle Detti took the bronze.

While some new faces topped the podium in the individual events, the Americans continued their relay dominance on the final evening of competition. The men’s team carried on their undefeated 400 medley streak while the women earned the United States’ 1,000th collective Olympic gold medal.

Swimming World is recounting all the highlights from the 2016 Rio Olympic Games through a series of Splashbacks. Memories from August 891011 and 12 are also available.
