Alabama junior Rhyan White swam an impressive 1:49.30 to win the 200 back on the final night of the Tennessee Double Dual in Knoxville. Last year’s NCAA top seed before the meet got cancelled, finished within a second of her best time of 1:48.0 from last year’s SECs as she won ahead of fellow Crimson Tide swimmer Morgan Liberto (1:54.03). The Crimson Tide swept the 200 backs with Jake Marcum taking the men’s race at 1:40.48.

Alabama also started the night with a win from Kensey McMahon in the 1650 at 15:54.06 ahead of Virginia’s Paige Madden (16:01.93). Last year, McMahon (2nd) and Madden (6th) were among the favorites to win the 1650 national title and it looks like they will carry that same distinction into this season if we can get to a championship meet safely.

Virginia swept the 100 frees with Kate Douglass swimming a strong 47.10, a full second ahead of Alabama’s Morgan Scott (48.15), while freshman Matt Brownstead broke the Virginia record with a 42.03.

Brownstead broke the national high school record last season in the 50 free, but missed a chance to get the 100 record because the meet was cancelled halfway through to slow down the COVID-19 pandemic in March. Brownstead’s swim tonight showed that that national high school record of 42.34 from David Nolan in 2011 could have been under threat.

Douglass returned at the end of the night with a 46.86 lead-off on the 400 free relay, breaking 47 for the first time. She paved the way for Alex Walsh (47.84), Lexi Cuomo (48.91) and Paige Madden (47.82) to win at 3:11.43.

The Cavaliers kept the momentum rolling into the 200 breast with Ella Nelson taking the women’s race at 2:07.19 in a 1-2-3 finish with Anna Keating (2:07.26) and Alexis Wenger (2:07.79), while Keefer Barnum won the men’s race at 1:54.36. Alex Walsh had the fastest time in exhibition with a 2:06.72.

Abby Harter took the win in the 200 fly at 1:53.73 in a 1-2 with Jessie Nava (1:54.36), while Tennessee’s Kayky Mota won the men’s race at 1:42.58.

The Virginia men also closed the night with a thrilling win in the 400 free relay with Matt Brownstead (42.21), Sam Schilling (42.95), August Lamb (42.54) and Jack Wright (42.14) to touch first at 2:49.84 ahead of Alabama’s team of Matt King (42.19), Jonathan Berneburg (42.69), Kacper Piotrowski (42.65) and Cam Auerbach (42.89) at 2:50.42.

Virginia’s Jack Wright also won the 1650 at 15:13.81.
