Alabama will close out 2016 high school swimming action with its state championship this weekend.

Girls Meet

The girls from Auburn sweep the relay top seeds this weekend. They have a dominating lead entering the 200 medley relay, seeded over two seconds ahead of Westminster Christian Academy and a tight pack of schools. In the 200 and 400 freestyle relays Auburn has a one second edge on the field.

Harley Lopez Miro and Hadley Dowdle, both of Auburn, are the top two seeds in the 200 freestyle. All four of Auburn’s entries are in the top 16.

A trio of seniors sit atop the 200 IM, led by Athens’ Mallory Underwood (2:09.99).

In the 50 freestyle, Altamont’s Anna-Julia Jutsch (24.35), Huntsville’s Regan Weakley (24.39), and Oak Mountain’s Haley Burt (24.42) are set to battle it out for the state crown. Burt is then the quickest entry in the 100 freestyle (52.63) followed by Dowdle (52.85) and Weakley (53.17).

Northridge High School’s Auburn University commit Jewels Harris leads the way in the 100 butterfly (56.64) and the 100 backstroke (57.13).

Three swimmers are seeded under 5:10 in the 500 freestyle: Tuscaloosa’s Peyton Osborne (5:07.33), UMS-Wright’s Paige Madden (5:08.31), and Underwood (5:09.64).

Spain Park’s  Rachel Cunningham will be tough to beat in the 100 breaststroke. The senior is entered in 1:05.39. The next best time is a 1:07.06 from Madison Academy’s freshman Katie Pollard.

Boys Meet

Auburn leads the 200 medley and 400 freestyle relay entries while Huntsville is the top seed in the 200 freestyle relay. A number of different swimmers lead the way in the individual events.

Briarwood Christian’s Sadler Mckeen is the swimmer to beat in the boys’ 200 freestyle, entered with a 1:42.53. His lead is phenomenal in the 500 freestyle, where his entry time is a 4:27.05 and the next best swimmers are at 4:49.

The only swimmer under two minutes, Scottsboro’s Kyle Vosen (1:57.58) holds the number one spot in the 200IM.

Northview’s Wen Zhang has a comfortable sixth tenth entry lead of 21.21 in the splash and dash. His lead is even greater in the 100 freestyle where Zhang’s entry is a 46.25 to James Clemens’ Andrew Shea (48.24). Holy Spirit’s Zachary Smith dives into the 100 butterfly with a time (50.48) a second and a half faster than the next best swimmer and with just under a second lead in the 100 backstroke (52.91).

Auburn senior Connor Duggan (1:01.33) has the upper hand over Scottsboro junior Kyle Vosen (1:01.53) in the 100 breaststroke.
