Petition Seeking Olympic Games Cancellation Surges to More Than 200,000 Signatures

The online petition recently launched to encourage the cancellation of this summer’s Olympic Games in Tokyo has received more than 200,000 signatures in just two days, according to a report by Inside the Games. The petition was started by Kenji Utsunomiya and cites that, with cases of COVID-19 spiking in Japan, it would be impossible to hold the Olympics in a safe manner.

Several cities in Japan, including Tokyo, are currently in a State of Emergency as Coronavirus cases surge and vaccinations are not readily available in the Asian country. The online petition states that holding the Games would place an emphasis on the international sporting event and not on the health of Japanese citizens. It also states there is concern that brining in athletes, officials and media from the around the world heighten the risk of COVID-19 spread.

“The spread of new Corona infections has not stopped at all not only in Tokyo but also in various parts of Japan and around the world to this day,” Utsunomiya said. “Vaccination, which started at the end of last year, is currently only widespread in some areas such as Europe and the United States, and is not the decisive factor in preventing infection. Under these circumstances, it is extremely difficult to think that the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics can be held safely in July this year. If held in this situation, the Olympics, which should be a “festival of peace, ” would deviate significantly from that philosophy.”

The petition is directed to International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach, who announced in the past two days that the IOC has reached an agreement with Pfizer to provide vaccinations to athletes who have not yet received it.

I think that holding the Olympics this year is as dangerous as last year we should cancel them as was done in 1961 1940 and 1944 Killing people by disease is the same as killing in wars
