Penn State Swimming Defeats West Virginia at ‘Pink Meet’

Penn State Swimming defeated West Virginia 167-125 in the men’s meet Friday evening in McCoy Natatorium.

Tallying 11 first-place finishes, the men are now 26-15 against the Mountaineers all-time. It was Penn State’s “Pink Meet” as the team wore pink suits to raise cancer awareness. The Penn State women will do the same Saturday at noon when they host West Virginia.

Sophomore, Michael Daly started the individual portion of the meet with a win in the 1000 Yard freestyle (9:13.05) and added wins in the 200 back (1:46.66) and the 500 free (4:32.94) as the meet continued. Senior captain Liam Veregin secured a win for the Nittany Lions by touching first in the 100 back (48.76) and assisting in the winning 200 medley (1:28.73) relay team. His co-captain, Austin Wilson, also added to the final score with two third-place finishes in the 100 back (50.17) and the 200 back (1:50.91).

Freshmen Daniel Raisanen and Samuel Rennard both scored points for the Nittany Lions today. Raisanen assisted in the win by placing first in both the 200 breast (2:02.31) and the 100 breast (56.45) and Rennard earned two second place times in the 1000 free (9:33.86) and in the 500 free (4:38.38).

Zac Zwijacz and Will Roberson both touched first in their respective event with Zwijacz winning the 200 fly (1:48.53) and Roberson in the 50 free (20.05). Roberson also placed second in the 100 free (44.89) and assisted in the winning 200 medley relay (1:28.73).

Hayden Harlow finished the meet with two top-two scores, placing first in the 200 free (1:39:75) and second in the 200 breast (2:03.69). Fellow junior, Brad Johnson also tallied a top-two finish with a second place time in the 100 breast (56.61).

Women’s meet

Penn State Swimming took the victory in its women’s “Pink Meet” against West Virginia with a final score of 170-115, Saturday afternoon in McCoy Natatorium.

This was the team’s third win of the season and the Nittany Lion’s 13th win all-time against the Mountaineers. The women had five event sweeps in the 200 and 500 freestyle, 100 and 200 backstroke, and 100 butterfly.

Carly Hart, junior breaststroke and IM swimmer, had another great meet with two individual wins in the 100 and 200 breast (2:16.47) and a B-Cut time in the 100 breast (1:01.78). Hart also placed second in the 200 IM (2:04.67).

Sophomore Marie Schobel, senior Maddie Hart, junior Stephanie Szekely, and freshman Abbie Amdor also earned a pair of wins. Schobel won the 100 (55.07) and 200 back (1:58.67), while Hart won the 100 (55.08) and 200 (2:02.86) fly and placed second in the 200 back (1:59.99). Szekely had some exemplary swims, winning the 1000 free (10:13.39) and 200 IM (2:04.63), in addition to having the second-fastest time in the 200 back. Amdor had a strong showing once again, winning the 100 free (50.42) for the second week in a row and the 200 free (1:50.28). With a single win, junior Camryn Barry took the 500 free (4:58.48) for the second consecutive week and placed second in the 200 free (1:50.78).

On the boards, senior Christina Crowell swept the meet, winning the 1-meter (282.30) by a margin of 24 points and the 3-meter (274.95) dive by a margin of eight. Crowell’s 1-meter score qualified her for the NCAA Zone A Regional Championships. This is the earliest in her collegiate career that she has ever qualified.

West Virginia victories

WVU captured four total victories on the day, as freshman Emily Haimes led the way with three victories, including two individual wins and one relay win in her first collegiate meet.

Senior Morgan Bullock also collected one individual win, while senior Julia Nilton, sophomore Emma Bliss and junior Giselle Gursoy each grabbed a relay win.

Haimes made her WVU debut Saturday afternoon and captured her first two career victories in the 50-yard freestyle and the 100-yard butterfly. Bullock’s first win of her senior campaign came in the 200-yard individual medley, before Haimes, Nilton, Bliss and Gursoy tallied the win in the 400 free relay.
