Patrick Henry Super Frosh Caroline Kulp Dominates Virginia 5A State High School Championships

The Patrick Henry girls and Menchville boys won their respective Virginia 5A State High School Championships.  Caroline Kulp delivered for Patrick Henry as a freshman with two individual wins, both by way of 5A state records.

Girls

Patrick Henry High School dominated the girls 5A state championship with 328 points.  Briar Woods (223) and Albemarle (195) took second and third.

Patrick Henry’s Caroline Kulp smashed the 5A state record in the 200-yard free.  First, she clocked a 1:51.86 in prelims before dropping the time to a 1:49.56 in the finale to win as a freshman.  That swim blasted the 1:52.15 set by Andi Mack in 2015.

Kulp picked up her second victory and 5A state record with a 4:49.14 in the 500-yard free in finals after posting a 4:56.31 in prelims.  Those times cleared the 4:56.80 set by Caroline Wanner last year.

Patrick Henry’s Whittney Hamilton broke the 5A state record in the 50-yard free with a 23.60 in prelims before winning finals in 23.63.  Olivia Fisher owned the previous mark with a 23.67 from last year.

Atlee’s Olivia Fisher downed the 5A state mark in the 100-yard breast with a 1:03.50.  That swim cleared the 1:03.94 set by Larissa Neilan in 2014.

Patrick Henry’s Cabell Whitlow won the 200-yard IM in 2:03.68.

Lee-Davis’ Molly Sheffield picked up the 100-yard fly title in 55.19.

Briar Woods’ Camryn Barry topped the 100-yard free in 51.20.

Potomac Falls’ Charlotte Fieeiki claimed the 100-yard back in 56.56.

Patrick Henry’s Caroline Kulp, Olivia Stanley, Shelby Stanley and  ripped off a 5A record in the 400-yard free relay with a 3:30.86.  That cleared the 3:33.96 set by Hickory last year.

Patrick Henry’s Cabell Whitlow, Taylor Summerlin, Olivia Stanley and Shelby Stanley topped the 200-yard medley relay in 1:47.37.

Patrick Henry’s Whittney Hamilton, Cabell Whitlow, Taylor Summerlin and Caroline Kulp picked up the 200-yard free relay in 1:37.05.

Thomas Jefferson’s Gloria Chen claimed the one-meter diving title with 343.75 points.

Boys

Menchville High School won the boys 5A team title with 272 points, while Princess Anne High School took second with 245 points.  Albemarle High placed third with 201 points.

The meet certainly missed now-graduated Andrew Seliskar, who owns nearly every individual 5A record.

Menchville’s Alex Moore topped the 50-yard free in 20.96.Moore doubled up with a 45.83 in the 100-yard free.

Tuscarora’s Simon Shi claimed the 200-yard IM title in 1:53.27. Shi also won the 500-yard free in 4:37.33.

Patrick Henry’s Ted Schubert captured the 100-yard fly in 49.15. Schubert doubled with a 49.86 to win the 100-yard back.

Thomas Jefferson’s Jonathan Pollock won the 200-yard free in 1:41.62.

Princess Anne’s Daniel Arris earned the 100-yard breast crown in 57.67.

Menchville’s Jordan Duncan, Griffen Younger, Kade Younger and Alex Moore won the 200-yard medley relay in 1:35.23.

Menchville’s Niko Nemceff, Kade Younger, Jordan Duncan and Alex Moore also won the 200-yard free relay in 1:26.52.

Albemarle’s Jack Robbins, Caleb Smith, Nick Pease and Hogan Harper won the 400-yard free relay in 3:10.20.

George Marshall’s Ian Shelton won the one-meter diving title with 559.55 points.
