Pan Zhanle Snares 100 Freestyle Title at Chinese National Games; 13-Year-Old Yu Zidi Topped in 200 Fly
The performance wasn’t one of the finest of his career, but Pan Zhanle did enough in the 100-meter freestyle on Friday night to capture the gold medal in the 100-meter freestyle. The reigning Olympic champion and world-record holder clocked a time of 48.01, which was fast enough to defeat runnerup Liu Wudi, who checked in with a time of 48.25. Pan’s win followed a third-place finish in the 200 freestyle earlier in the week.
Pan owns the world record at 46.40 and his season best sits at 47.77, from last spring’s Chinese National Championships. While he is not in the form that landed him Olympic glory in Paris during the Summer of 2024, the 21-year-old figures to be a major factor when the Olympic Games are held in Los Angeles in 2028. His career is dotted with multiple sub-47 performances and returning to that level is expected in the future.
Another Olympic champion earned victory in the 200 individual medley on Night Five of the meet, as Wang Shun dominated the field in his prime event. The 2020 Olympic titlist in the 200 IM, Wang put together a sharp swim of 1:56.20, good for a season best. Wang had been 1:56.58 at the Chinese Nationals. He was followed to the wall on Friday night by Tao Guannan, who recorded a mark of 1:59.86.
Coming off an Asian record in the 200 individual medley, 13-year-old phenom Yu Zidi was surprisingly beat in the final of the women’s 200 butterfly. Chen Yinling produced a performance of 2:05.45, which handed her a comfortable margin over Yu, who stopped the clock in 2:06.57. Third place went to veteran Zhang Yufei in 2:07.90. Given her continental-record swim in the 200 IM, there were expectations for a big swim in the 200 fly, but Yu finished just outside her personal best of 2:06.43.
In the final of the women’s 50 backstroke, Wan Letian added to her prior triumph in the 100 backstroke. Over the one-lap distance, Wan managed a time of 27.38.
Semifinal competition saw Qin Haiyang lead the way into the final of the 200 breaststroke with an effort of 2:10.80 and Hong Kong’s Siobhan Haughey, already the winner in the 200 freestyle, topped the field in the 100 freestyle with a swim of 53.46. The women’s 200 breaststroke was paced by Zhu Leiju in 2:25.96 and the Wang Yutian was quickest in the 200 backstroke, going 1:59.52.
