Pac-12 Recap: USC, UCLA Sweep Arizona, ASU

Seniors Riley Scott and Patrick Mulcare won three events apiece for the second day in a row while junior Louise Hansson matched the feat Saturday, leading the USC women’s and men’s swimming and diving teams to a sweep of Arizona on Saturday morning (Nov. 3) at the Uytengsu Aquatics Center.

The USC women improved to 3-0 overall and 3-0 in the Pac-12 while the men moved to 2-0, 2-0.

USC’s women’s 200y medley relay of Hansson, Scott, junior Catherine Sanchez and junior Tatum Wade kicked off the meet with a win in 1:40.63 while Troy’s men’s relay of Mulcare, senior Carsten Vissering, freshman Ariel Spektor and sophomore Nikola Miljenic touched first in 1:28.45, a season best.

Arizona’s Hannah Cox won the women’s 1000y free in 10:05.11 with USC’s Elizabeth Stinson second (10:09.54). USC freshman Viktor Johansson, after two distance wins Friday, took the men’s 1000 today in 9:05.33 with freshman Owen Kao third (9:20.12).

Wade won the 200y free in 1:48.43 with fellow junior Kirsten Vose third (1:50.88), out-touched for second by 0.01. Freshman Alexei Sancov powered to first in the men’s 200 in 1:37.86.

Hansson won the 100y back in 54.13. Mulcare pocketed his first win of the day in the men’s 100 back with a 47.87.

Senior Maddie Wright led another sweep for the Trojans in the 200y fly with a 1:57.22.

Sophomore Marta Ciesla sped to first in the 50y free with a 22.63, followed to the wall by a trio of Wildcats. Senior Kyle Grissom won the men’s sprint in 20.24 with Miljenic second (20.55).

Following the break, Ciesla won the women’s 100y free in 49.79 with a 2-3-4 finish for Arizona.

Hansson breezed to a win in the women’s 200y back in 1:58.80, followed to the wall by Wade (2:02.35). Mulcare dominated his specialty in the men’s race in 1:46.23.

Scott led another 1-2-3 sweep in the breaststroke, taking the 200 in 2:12.80.

Arizona’s Sam Ida won the men’s 200y breast in 1:59.07 with Vissering second (2:00.35).

Cox won her second race by taking the 500y free (4:51.19). Wright, not long after winning the 200y fly, powered to second in the race in 4:56.68. In the men’s 500y free, Johansson reasserted himself again to win in 4:23.18.

On springboard, Henry Fusaro (370.35) and Brad Dalrymple (298.50) went 1-2 on 1-meter. Fusaro also won 3-meter (366.60), Dalrymple finishing third (340.50). For the women, Naomi Gowlett led three Trojans on 1-meter (293.18) and 3-meter (322.95).

Hansson made it three wins, taking her specialty, the 100y fly in 53.00 with Sanchez second (54.67). Arizona’s Chatham Hobbs claimed the men’s race in 48.35, 0.07 ahead of USC senior Alex Valente.

Scott and Mulcare each won three events against Arizona State. The Trojan women won, 168-121, to improve to 2-0 while the USC men, in their first dual meet of the season, won 173-129.

UCLA edges Arizona, Arizona State

he UCLA swimming and diving team wrapped up a successful weekend by topping Arizona State 160-140 on Saturday morning at Spieker Aquatics Center.

Redshirt senior Maria Polyakova had a banner day in the diving part of the competition to lead the Bruins (3-0) to victory. The Moscow, Russia native set new school and Dirks Pool records with a 355.50 score in the 1m, shattering her previous mark of 339.05 by 16.45 points. That result put UCLA over the 150-mark and clinched the win.

Earlier in the day, Polyakova secured a first-place result in the 3m with a season-best score of 339.75.

In the pool, Amy Okada (100 back, 200 back), Sandra Soe (500 free, 1000 free), and Claire Grover (100 free, 100 breast) all secured multiple event wins. Maisie Jameson (50 free) and Emily Lo (200 breast) both logged their first wins of the year as well.

The UCLA swimming and diving team recorded a 156-144 win over Pac-12 rival Arizona on Friday afternoon, making the team’s first home meet at Speiker Aquatics Center a successful one.

Cox won two events, while Delaney Schnell, Katrina Konopka, and Francesca Neubauer each notched a win in the loss to the Bruins.

Cox won the 1,000 free with 9:58.00.

Cal swims past Washington State

Katie McLaughlin, Abbey Weitzeil, Cassidy Bayer and Ema Rajic won two events apiece and Cal set a pair of Gibb Pool records en route to a 158-95 dual-meet victory over Washington State Saturday.

The Golden Bears started things off with a pool mark in the 200-yard medley relay as the foursome of Sophie Krivokapic-Zhou, Rajic, Weitzeil and Alicia Wilson touched in 1:42.51 to lower the record by 0.01 seconds. Weitzeil also put her name in the record book individually with her time of 49.42 in the 100 free later in the meet.

Bayer, a freshman, picked her two individual victories in the 1000 free (10:14.01) and the 200 butterfly (1:59.39), while fellow freshman Rajic earned her first-place finishes both breaststroke events, taking the 100-yard distance in 1:03.39 and the 200-yard race in 2:15.45.

Weitzeil added the 100 backstroke (54.91) to her 100 free title, and McLaughlin won the 50 free in 23.09 – more than a second ahead of runner-up Robin Neumann – and the 400 individual medley (4:20.03).

Courtney Mykkanen (200 back, 2:02.26), Neumann (500 free, 4:57.67) and Elise Garcia (100 fly, 55.52) also claimed individual victories, and the 200 free relay of Bayer, Jenna Campbell, Ali Harrison and Weitzeil closed the meet with a winning time of 1:34.83.
