Olympic Gold Medalist Kristine Quance Julian Joins UCLA as Volunteer Assistant

UCLA swim and dive has added 1996 Olympic Gold Medalist and two-time Honda Sport Award winner Kristine Quance Julian to the program as a volunteer assistant coach, it was announced on Thursday by head coach Jordan Wolfrum.

Quance Julian brings a decorated resume with her to Westwood, both as an athlete and a coach. She was a 23-time All-American and three-time Pac-10 Swimmer of the Year during a Hall of Fame career at USC from 1994-97, won a Gold Medal in the 4X100 medley relay at the 1996 Summer Olympics as part of an illustrious run with USA Swimming, and has been a successful coach on the club circuit for nearly 20 years.

“We are incredibly excited to add Kristine Quance Julian to our staff this year,” said Wolfrum. “Kristine brings with her a wealth of experience and perspective, both as a coach and athlete, on the greatest stages in our sport. I look forward to working with and learning from Kristine this season. Our athletes will benefit from her coaching, but the most exciting thing for me is that they will have access to one more strong female role model in our sport. We are proud to welcome Kristine to Westwood.”

The Northridge, Calif. native has been the associate head coach at Rose Bowl Aquatics since 2004, where she has been named the American Swimming Coaches Association’s Coach of the Year for the Southern California region five times. While at Rose Bowl, Quance Julian’s athletes set multiple National Age Group and Southern California Swimming records. She got her start in club coaching with CLASS Aquatics in 2002, and was previously a volunteer assistant at her alma mater from 1997-2000.

Quance Julian’s international career was highlighted by her appearance at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta, where she qualified in the 200 individual medley and 100 breaststroke. She earned her gold medal by swimming the breaststroke leg of the USA’s 4X100 medley squad in the heats. Quance Julian was named the American Swimmer of the Year in 1997 by Swimming World magazine after finishing second in the 200 IM and fourth in the 200 breast at the 1997 Pan Pacific Championships.

During her time at USC, Kristine Quance Julian was a 20-time individual champion and 23-time All-American. As a senior in 1997, she captained the Trojans to a team title at the NCAA Championships in Indianapolis en route to NCAA Swimmer of the Year honors. A nominee for the Honda Award as a freshman in 1993-94, Julian Quance went on to repeat as the Honda Sport Award winner for swimming & diving in 1995-96 and 1996-97. She was inducted into the USC Athletics Hall of Fame as part of the class of 2015.

Kristine Quance Julian is married to Jeff Julian, head coach at Rose Bowl Aquatics. Their son, Trenton Julian, is currently a senior on men’s swim team at California.
