This weekend’s Texas High School State Championship meets are sure to be quick at both the 5A and 6A level. Action begins on Friday with prelims for both divisions, followed by finals on Saturday.

5A Meet

The girls 100 butterfly features four girls in the 56 second range, led by Frisco freshman Lindsay Looney. Bryant High School junior Julia Cook enters the meet with solid leads in both the 50 and 100 freestyle events.

Sophomore Abby Koczo of Frisco Reedy has the fastest times to date in the 200 IM and 100 backstroke. Texas A&M commit Haley Yelle is the top seed in the 200 and 500 freestyle. The Magnolia High School girls enter with top seeds in all three relays.

Highland Park High School claims the top spots in the 200 and 400 freestyle relays for the boys. CSAM junior Peter Simmons is the only swimmer under the 50 second mark in the 100 backstroke as well as the 100 butterfly.

The top five entrants into the 100 breaststroke are all seniors. Brenham’s Hudson Smith and Manvel’s Adriel Sanes lead the way with times in the 56 second range. The duo also top the 200 IM rankings. Austin’s Grant Reed will look to take the 200 freestyle and 100 freestyle.

6A Meet

Austin Westlake’s Dakota Luther is the top seed in the girls’ 200 freestyle and 100 butterfly. In the 100 fly she is the only one under 53, while she leads a group of four swimmers under the 1:50 barrier in the 200 free.

Austin Westlake sophomore Emma Wheal will be shooting for a sprint double, entering the meet with top times in the 50 and 100 freestyle. In the 100 butterfly Woodlands duo senior Emily Reese and freshman Lillian Nordmann are on her heels with 53 second entries. Lucie Nordmann then leads the way in the 100 backstroke. She is also the third seed in the 50 freestyle. The Woodlands have the fastest time in the 200 medley and 400 freestyle relays, giving them the opportunity to open and close the meet with state titles.

Southlake Carroll’s Alex Zettle is the fastest entrant in the 200 freestyle and second in the 500 freestyle. Zach Yeadon leads the way in the longer distance. Houston Stratford’s Timothy Bobo is top seed in the 50 freestyle and second in the 100 free. While there is a stack of competition behind him in the 50, he and Austin Westlake’s Matthew Willenbring separate themselves from the pack in the 100.

Allen’s Jason Park has over a second lead in the 100 backstroke. In the 100 breaststroke Ryan Geheb sits atop the rankings as the only swimmer under 56 seconds.
