Noah Henderson, Sam Hoover Break State Records as Marvin Ridge Wins North Carolina Boys 3A State Championships

The 2019 North Carolina High School Boys’ State Swimming and Diving 3A State Championships took place on Friday, February 8 at the Triangle Aquatic Center in Cary, N.C.

Western Alamance’s Noah Henderson broke the North Carolina state and 3A marks in the 50 free and got the class mark in the 100 fly, while Chapel Hill’s Sam Hoover did the same in the 100 free. Marvin Ridge’s 4×50 free relay and 4×100 free relay also snuck under the previous class 3A marks.

Marvin Ridge claimed the team title by an impressive margin, besting Chapel Hill (201) and Charlotte Catholic (168). Henderson was named the meet’s Most Outstanding Swimmer.

The meet was off to an exciting start in the 4×50 medley relay: SW Guilford’s Kyle Kwon (25.63), Sawyer Moseley (27.52), William Watson (22.33) and Jeff Jones (23.17) edged out Concord by five-hundredths, 1:38.65 to 1:38.75, while Charlotte Catholic was right behind in 1:38.75.

Charlotte Catholic’s John Gehrig dropped over two seconds from his prelims time to win the 200 free in 1:42.47. Swansboro’s Grant Meadows raced to second in 1:43.31 and Northern Durham’s Thomas Pritchard took third in 1:45.10.

Charlotte Catholic’s Jack Meehan dominated the 200 IM, posting a time of 1:50.21 to best the field by three seconds. Peter Bretzmann of Chapel Hill took second in 1:53.01 while South Iredell’s Joseph Moore finished third in 1:35.25.

Henderson, an NC State commit, splashed-and-dashed his way to 50 free gold in record-setting fashion. His time of 19.92 broke the North Carolina state record of 20.33 set by Max Edwards at the 4A State meet last night, while also crushing the 3A mark of 20.44 set by Chris Compton back in 1990. Marvin Ridge teammates Boyd Poelke (20.80) and Charles Rothenberger (21.19) finished second and third, respectively.

Shortly after, Henderson was back in the water to take his second individual gold of the night in the 100 fly. His time of 47.30 destroyed Eugene Godsoe’s 2006 3A mark of 48.40. Also sneaking under the old record was runner-up Boyd Poelke, who verbally committed to UNC for 2020, in 47.96. Watson was third in 49.62 as the only other swimmer under the 50-second barrier.

Hoover powered home to a two-second victory in the 100 free. His time of 44.62 eclipsed the State record of 44.64 set by Jack Messenger two years ago, and was also well under the 3A mark of 45.47 set by Compton nearly two decades ago. Rothenberger was second in 46.67 and DH Conley’s Trevor Torres was third in 47.41.

After taking second in the 200 free, Bretzmann found himself on top of the podium in the 500 free with a winning time of 4:39.73. It was a close race for second, with Pritchard ultimately edging out Gehrig 4:41.39 to 4:41.51.

Marvin Ridge’s Poelke (21.19), Josh Stablein (21.58), Connor Charette (22.28) and Rothenberger (21.00) crushed the competition in the 4×50 free relay, combining to beat the old 3A record in 1:26.05 by three-hundredths. Mount Tabor was second in 1:29.34 and Chapel Hill wound up third in 1:29.93.

Mitchell Langston of Cleveland powered home to a win in the 100 back, stopping the clock in 51.01. Concord’s Andrew Lucky raced to second in 52.15 as Marvin Ridge’s Brayden Brewer finished third in 54.38.

Hoover found himself on top of the podium for the second time tonight, this time getting his hands to the wall first in the 100 breast in 56.06, just shy of the 3A record of 56.02. Meehan grabbed the silver in 56.61 and bronze went to Concord’s Matthew Lucky in 56.73.

It was deja-vu for the Marvin Ridge boys: Poelke (46.60), Nicholas Piscitelli (47.74), Stablein (47.57) and Rothenberger (46.75) broke the 3A record in the 4×100 free relay to conclude the meet. Their time of 3:08.66 demolished the old mark of 3:10.82 they set last year. Second went to Chapel Hill (3:13.58) and third went to Charlotte Catholic (3:16.24).

Thought this was worth mentioning: Concord Boys Medley Relay was seeded 10th going into the meet. They were 4th after the morning prelims and finished 2nd in the finals, missing the 1st place finish by only 5/100’s of a second. 🙂
