Mitch Larkin Enters 100 Back World Rankings at 2017 Australian Champs

Olympic superstars highlighted the third day of prelims at the 2017 Australian National Championships as Mitch Larkin, Emily Seebohm, and Emma McKeon each picked up top seeds in their respective events.

Mitch Larkin dazzled in prelims of the men’s 100 back, posting a top qualifying time of 53.69. Larkin’s time moves him to fifth in the world rankings for this year, with the 2017 best being a 53.04 from Xu Jiayu. Zac Incerti picked up the second place seed with a 54.35, followed by Benjamin Treffers and his time of 54.58.

A trio of 2:02s highlighted prelims of the men’s 200 IM, led by Travis Mahoney. Mahoney posted a 2:02.04 to grab a narrow lead over the second and third place qualifiers. Clyde Lewis and Jared Gilliland delivered times of 2:02.31 and 2:02.70 for second and third place.

Emma McKeon entered the world rankings for the 200 free with a top qualifying time of 1:57.99. Her time sits as tenth in the world for this season, but as the Australian and All Comers record holder with a time of 1:54.83, McKeon is likely to drop that time in finals. Mikka Sheridan turned in a 1:59.01 to qualify second overall, followed by Kotuku Ngawati’s 1:59.06.

Backstroke superstar Emily Seebohm claimed the top seed in the women’s 50 back with a 28.07. Seebohm’s qualifying time sits just behind her season best of 27.72 from the NSW State Championships. Seebohm will be joined in the middle of the pool by Holly Barratt and Kaylee McKeown, who delivered matching times of 28.22 for the second place seed.

It was a quick turn-around for Barratt as she quickly jumped to the top of the qualifiers list in the women’s 50 fly. Barratt posted a 26.90 to narrowly claim the first place seed, just ahead of Brittany Elmslie and her time of 26.92. Sara Saal rounded out the top three qualifiers with a 27.01.

Matthew Wilson continued to build upon his success in the 200 breast, with a top showing in prelims of the 100. Wilson turned in a 1:00.88 to post the top time in the morning, just shy of his season best of 1:00.23 from the NSW State Championships. Grayson Bell picked up the second place seed with a 1:01.64, while Tommy Sucipto was third in prelims with a 1:01.72.

Mitch Larkin went into Rio one of the 100 and 200 back favorites. What went wrong then with him and other Aussie swimmers at the Olympics. I will not be taking much heed to world no1 swimmers at these world champs.

Notice Australia’s most disappointing major meet swimmer Emily Seebohm has qualified for another world champs. Bout time she lived up to her reputation and beat the world in her pet 100 back event.
