2017 Men’s B1G Championships Day 3 Finals: Finnerty, Ryan Post New B1G Records

The third day of the 2017 Men’s B1G Swimming & Diving Championships were highlighted by a pair of B1G Conference and Championship records in the men’s 100 breast and 100 back.

Indiana’s Ian Finnerty slid past Olympian Cody Miller’s B1G record in the 100 breast, while Penn State’s Shane Ryan soared past Ohio State’s Matt McHugh to become the newest conference champion and record holder.

100 Fly

Ohio State senior Matt McHugh claimed the gold in the men’s 100 fly final, stopping the clock at a 44.91 to be the only swimmer underneath the 45-second mark.

Indiana’s Vinicius Lanza picked up second overall with a time of 45.07, followed by Wisconsin’s Cannon Clifton and his time of 45.81.

Michigan’s Evan White finished fourth overall with a time of 46.05, while Ohio State’s Noah Lense was fifth with a 46.28.

Michigan’s Miles Smachlo (46.43), Iowa’s Jerry Twarowski (46.78), and Minnesota’s Tuomas Pokkinen (47.02) were sixth through eighth respectively.

400 IM

Charles Swanson of Michigan swam ahead of the competition in finals of the men’s 400 IM. Swanson turned in a 3:41.13 to claim first and lower his prelims time by close to four seconds.

Picking up second was Minnesota’s Jakub Maly with a final time of 3:44.41, while third went to Ohio State’s Ching Lim (3:46.89).

Joshua Brooks of Purdue finished fourth overall with a 3:47.58, followed closely by the Michigan duo of Cameron Stitt (3:47.72) and Patrick Hansford (3:47.79).

Purdue’s Adam Noens took seventh with a 3:48.17 and Michigan’s Stephen Holmqvist was eighth with a 3:48.21.

200 Free

Blake Pieroni of Indiana uncorked a 1:32.13 in finals of the men’s 200 free, improving upon his prelims time of 1:33.72.

It was a tight race Ohio State’s Joshua Fleagle and Michigan’s Felix Auboeck as the two dueled for second. Fleagle touched first with a 1:33.25, followed closely by Auboeck’s 1:33.27.

Brett Pinfold of Wisconsin finished fourth overall with a time of 1:33.85, followed by the Hoosier duo of Mohamed Samy (1:34.05) and Jackson Miller (1:34.14).

Wisconsin’s Matthew Hutchins and Indiana’s Marwin El Kamash completed the top eight with times of 1:35.32 and 1:35.86 respectively.

100 Breast

Indiana claimed another individual victory in finals of the 100 breast as Ian Finnerty powered to the only sub-52 second finish. Finnerty stopped the clock at a 51.38 for the win, scraping .67 seconds off his prelims time of 52.05. Finnerty’s time not only downed the Indiana school record, but it also took down the B1G Conference and Championship meet records. The previous B1G record was a 51.50 set by Cody Miller in 2013.

Michigan’s Jacob Montague took second overall with a 52.08, while the bronze medal was picked up by Ohio State’s Jack Barone and his time of 52.26.

The Minnesota duo of Conner McHugh and Eric Sande posted close times of 52.44 and 52.52 for fourth and fifth respectively, while Indiana’s Levi Brock was sixth with a 52.91.

Christopher Klein of Michigan and Gunther Cassell of Penn State grabbed seventh and eighth with times of 53.08 and 54.38 respectively.

100 Back

Shane Ryan of Penn delivered a dominating performance in finals of the men’s 100 back. Ryan finished close to a full second ahead of the competition in B1G Conference and Championship meet record style. His time of 44.65 slides past Matt McHugh’s previous record of 45.07, set at last year’s championships.

Picking up second was Ohio State’s Matt McHugh with a final time of 45.52, while Indiana’s Robert Glover took third with a 46.45.

Thomas Trace of Ohio State added a fourth place finish of 46.53, followed closely by Michigan’s Tristan Sanders (46.61).

Michigan’s Luke Papendick (47.08), Ohio State’s Andrew Appleby (47.30), and Ohio State’s Mark Belanger (47.53) were sixth through eighth respectively.

3-Meter Diving

Michael Hixon of Indiana took home the title in the men’s 3-meter diving, gathering a final score of 520.40.

Ohio State’s Collin Zeng picked up second with a score of 510.30, while Purdue’s Steele Johnson finished third with 506.45.

Hector Boissier of Penn State grabbed fourth with a total of 465.85, followed by Indiana’s James Connor’s 455.95.

Purdue’s Joseph Cifelli (452.55) was sixth, just ahead of the Ohio State duo of Christopher Law (431.75) and Stephen Romanik (346.15).

200 Free Relay

The 200 free relay final came down to a title battle between the first and second and the third and fourth place teams. Dueling for the title were the relay teams from Ohio State and Indiana, finishing .11 seconds apart.

Ohio State’s Massimo Chavez (19.59), Matt McHugh (18.85), Joshua Fleagle (19.00), and Thomas Trace (19.17) posted a combined time of 1:16.61 to claim the victory over the rest of the field.

Indiana’s Ali Khalafalla (19.15), Blake Pieroni (18.93), Anze Tavcar (19.33), and Samuel Lorentz (19.31) settled for second and a final time of 1:16.72.

Paul Powers (18.98), James William Jones (19.18), Vincent Tafuto (19.54), and Luke Papendick (19.88) of Michigan held off a charging Minnesota relay to pick up third with a time of 1:17.58.

Minnesota’s Bowen Becker (19.25), Paul Fair (19.48), Daryl Turner (19.64), and Tuomas Pokkinen (19.31) posted a fourth place finish of 1:17.68.

Iowa finished fifth overall with a 1:18.13, followed by Wisconsin’s 1:18.47.

Penn State and Purdue rounded out the top eight with times of 1:19.00 and 1:19.64 respectively.
