NEW COMMIT: Marshall University has received a new verbal commitment for the 2021-22 season and beyond from Ocean Springs, Miss. native Gabrielle Ivey.

She will join Jenna Bopp, Leigh Lopez-Silvers and Sofia Bormett in Huntington as a member of The Herd’s class of 2025.

She told Swimming World:

“I am beyond blessed to announce, I will be furthering my athletic and academic career at Marshall University. I am so grateful for God, my parents, coaches, friends and everyone who has supported me to reach this point. I can’t wait to see what Huntington holds for me! #wearemarshall”

Ivey does her club swimming with Biloxi Elite Swim Team and finished sixth in the 200 back at Cary Sectionals in March after recording seven top-3 finishes at the Mississippi State Championships in February. Last summer, she won seven gold medals at the Mississippi LCM State Championships.

Her best times include:

  • 50 free – 24.30
  • 100 free – 51.21
  • 200 free – 1:51.20
  • 200 back – 2:02.07
  • 200 IM – 2:06.46
  • 400 IM – 4:32.24

Also competing for Ocean Springs High School, Ivey is a six-time Mississippi State Championship finalist. She won the 100 fly and 200 free as a junior while taking first in the 200 IM and second in the 100 free during her sophomore season. She also earned gold in both the 100 back and 200 free in her freshman campaign.

Ivey also owns the Mississippi state records in the 200 free and 200 IM.

Ivey will make an immediate impact next year for The Herd and her versatility will be extremely useful. Under head coach Ian Walsh, Marshall finished fourth overall in the team standings at the 2020 Conference USA Championships.
