Marseille’s Medley Quartets & Theo Bussiere Pan For Gold In French Championship Records

The might of Marseille delivered three Championship records on the third day of racing at French Short-Course Nationals, new standards set by club 4x50m medley quartets, men and women, after Theo Bussiere took the pace of 100m breaststroke in France down to 57.42.

Florent Manaudou, a 22.44 win over 50m butterfly in the bag ahead of Max Grousset and Amaury Leveaux (22.89 and 23.04 respectively) led his club relay with a 23.40 backstroke split, Bussiere’s 25.99 on breaststroke handing over to Nicolas Vermorel (22.84’fly) before Clément Mignon delivered gold in with a 21.59 for the French record of 1:33.82.

Bussiere’s 57.42 championship-mark victory in the 100m ahead of Antoine Viquerat, on 58.34, fell just shy of the French record that is shared yet at 57.24 by Hugues Duboscq (2009) and Giacomo Perez Dortona (2014).

Marseille’s women’s quartet clocked 1:48.70, courtesy of Lila Touili (27.90), Mélanie Henique (30.38), Lena Bousquin (26.02) and Anna Santamans (24.40).

Touli had earlier shared gold in the 100m backstroke, her 59.07 matched by Valériya Egorova, of Russia ands racing for Nautic Club Alp’38.

In other action, Marie Wattel, of Montpellier, who contributing to the wave of record breaking in Angers in the first two days of racing, pipped Santamans for the 50m free crown, 24.21 to 24.31.

Nice-based Swiss medley ace and World titles podium placer this year, Jeremy Desplanches dispatched the opposition with a swift 4:03.71 almost 10sec ahead of next home in the 400m medley, while Lara Grangeon, Caledoniens, added to her tally of gold with a 2:07.67 win over Dutch Olympic marathon champion Sharon Van Rouwendaal, for Montpellier, on 2:07.73.

There were also titles for Sarcelles’ Fanny Deberghes, well ahead in the 200m breaststroke, on 2:22.94, and Nice’s versatile Jérémy Stravius, on 1:43.11 in the 200m freestyle.
