Marbelhead Women, Weston Men Claim State Titles At 2016 Massachusetts State High School Championships (Division II)

There were fast swims all around at the 2016 Massachusetts High School State Championships (Division II). The Marbelhead women swam ahead of the competition to take home the title with a total of 271.5 points, while second went to Weston and their 199 points. Longmeadow finished third with 188 points.

The meet kicked off with a fierce battle in the 200 Medley relay with Marblehead and Duxbury finishing a within half a second of each other. Marblehead’s Ellie Ronan, Amanda Wager, Meagan Hathaway, and Kylie Cronin posted a combined time of 1:48.31 for first over Duxbury’s 1:48.83.

Longmeadow’s Jerrica Li outlasted the competition in the 200 free posting a final time of 1:50.95. Second in the event went to Hathaway (1:54.76), while Longmeadow’s Sydney Joyce was third with a 1:56.23.

Li nabbed her second win of the meet in the 100 free with a final time of 50.27. Second in the event was Duxbury’s Grace Ali with a time of 52.71, while third went to Marblehead’s Ellie Ronan (53.50).

Julia Klier of Cohasset took home the gold in the 200 IM with a final time of 2:05.83, while Marblehead’s Grace Maguire was second with a 2:07.90. Third was Duxbury’s Mary Buckley (2:08.70).

Cronin flirted with a sub-24 in the 50 free, but stopped just shy with a final time of 24.05 for first. Bishop Stang’s Jeannette King grabbed second with a 24.42, while third went to Weston’s Katrina Angelucci (24.71).

Cronin and Grace Ali of Duxbury battled for first in the 100 fly finishing .35 seconds apart. Cronin got her hand to the wall first to stop the clock at 55.57 over Ali’s 55.92. Weston’s Christina Chiocca rounded out the top three with a 59.97 to be the only other swimmer under the one-minute mark.

The relay teams of Longmeadow and Weston dueled for first in the 200 free relay posting final times within .05 seconds of one another. Longmeadow’s Li, Casey BarrettSydney Joyce, and Monika Nowak finished first with a final time of 1:39.28, while Weston’s Angelucci, Katerina Georgakopoulos, Jackie Joseph, and Meg Peacher were a close second with 1:39.33.

On the men’s side it was Weston that took home the state title with an accumulated 215 points. Wayland finished as a close second with 206 points, while third went to Norwell with 202 points.

Matthew Quinney of Belchertown and Will Rinne of Norwell kept a close race in the 200 IM, finishing within .96 seconds of each other. Despite faster splits in the back half of the race from Rinne, Quinney finished first with a time of 1:56.02 over Rinne’s 1:56.98.

Nat Davenport of Duxbury delivered a swift 21.14 to win the 50 free. Ashland’s Roger Gu was second with a 21.36, while third went to last year’s event winner Christian Kinnon of Mystic Valley (21.61).

Davenport added a win in the 100 free with a time of 46.34. Norwell’s Auston Ramsay was second with a time of 46.86, with Gu rounding out the top three with a 46.99.

Johnny Williams of Northampton claimed a new meet record in the 100 fly with a final time of 49.03, lowering the former record of 50.11 set by Jackson Perry.

The 200 free  relay team from Duxbury, led by Davenport (21.49) turned in a first place finish with a combined time of 1:28.42. Davenport was joined by Kevin Coghlan (23.08), Brad Backlund (22.81), and Michael O’Neal (21.04).

Northampton’s Nick Whitcomb and Ramsay went stroke-for-stroke in the 100 back, posting final times a slim .03 seconds apart. Whitcomb got his hand to the wall with a final time of 51.71 over Ramsay’s 51.74.
