Luca Urlando, Chloe Clark Double Section Record Setters at CIF SAC-Joaquin Meet

At Saturday’s CIF-San Joaquin Section meet Rio Americano scored 251 points to win the boys meet, 20 ahead of Granite Bay with 231. Oak Ridge swept the relay titles. St. Francis totaled 254 points for a girls team victory while Del Oro was runner up with 206 points. Four girls’ Section records came down while two boys’ marks fell.

Boys

Oak Ridge’s sophomore Colby Mefford won the 200 freestyle in 1:37.57, picking up where his older brother Bryce left off last year, when he won the event in Section record time (1:34.93). Jesuit’s Hayden Johnson was also under 1:40, in 1:39.98.

Mefford’s freshman teammate Ben Dillard added to the golds with a 1:48.05 200 IM, only .04 faster than Jesuit’s Will Roberts in 1:48.09. Dillard posted a 54.31 to win the 100 breaststroke ahead of Andrew Britton of Joseph A Gregori in 54.82.

Bella Vista’s Finn O’Haimhirgin won the 50 freestyle in 20.59, a tenth faster than Tim Lee (20.69) of Vanden. O’Haimhirgin and Lee went one-two in the 100 free as well in times of 44.49 and 44.67.

Pioneer’s Connor Daniels got to the wall in 4:26.48 for the 500 freestyle title. Johnson was second (4:30.37).

C.K. McClatchy’s Luca Urlando set a section record in the 100 fly. The sophomore touched in 47.14, sneaking under the 47.19 set by Bryce Mefford in 2017. Urlando also slashed seven tenths off his own 100 back section record, finishing in 46.83. Mefford was runner up (49.03). Urlando also posted two noteworthy relay leadoff splits (a 20.43 in the 200 freestyle relay and a 44.47 on the 400 freestyle relay- both of those times would have won the individual events).

Dillard, Seth KonigJonathan Chu, and Evan McCormick won the 400 freestyle relay for Oak Ridge in 3:05.68. In the 200 medley relay the team used Mefford, Dillard, Konig, and Terry Chen to power to victory in 1:32.39. Mefford, Lee, Chen, and McCormick were a 1:24.56 for 200 fresstyle relay gold.

Girls

Davis High School was well ahead of the competition as Zoe CosgroveNatalie BercuttMia Motekaitis, and Cody Hargadon swam a 1:40.99 to win the 200 medley relay. That time destroyed the section record of 1:43.06 set by Rio Americano last year.

Motekaitis then won the 200 freestyle in 1:48.25, just edging Halladay Kinsey of Rio Americano in 1:48.69. Kinsey prevailed in the 100 fly, finishing in 53.59 to Motekaitis’ 54.99. Kinsey was just .08 shy of the Section record. Kinsey’s teammate Lizzie Menzmer finished third (55.11).

Granite Bay’s Chloe Clark broke two minutes to win the 200 IM in 1:58.29, lowering her own Section record set last year. She also won the 100 back with a 53.21, .02 faster than her own Section record..

Country Day’s Amalie Fackenthal sprinted ahead of the competition with a 22.89 50 freestyle. She was also first to the wall in the 100 free (49.13).

Davis’ Cosgrove showed her versatility, going from relay backstroker to 500 free champion with a time of 4:55.37. Cosgrove was runner up in the 100 back (54.35).

Fackenthal, Rebecca WatersonSydney Turner, and Athena Lin won a close 200 freestyle relay for Country Day in 1:35.33, just .01 away from the Section record, set by Rio Americano in 2013. Rio Americano was second in 1:35.55.

Lodi’s Gianni Pitto knocked nearly two seconds off her prelims time to out touch Christian Brothers’ Kristina Murphy to win the 100 breaststroke, 1:01.66 to 1:01.85. Pitto took down Murphy’s section record, a 1:01.83 set in 2017.

In the 400 freestyle relay Rio Americano got to the wall four seconds ahead of the next best team as Kailee Nabeta, Kinsey, Menzmer, and Tina Reuter posted a 3:25.42.
