Justin Ress Among Top Seeds of Semi-Final Shootouts at Charlotte UltraSwim

The first night of the 2018 Charlotte UltraSwim meet hosted the prelims and semi-finals of each of the 50 shootout events. The top 16 athletes from the prelims events moved on to the semi-finals, where the top 8 will continue on to tomorrow’s super semi-finals.

For clarity’s sake, the results below showcase the top eight who will continue on to the super semi-finals.

Women’s 50 Fly

AU’s Alyssa Tetzloff held off ABSC’s Donna Blaum in semi-finals of the women’s 50 fly. Tetzloff claimed the top seed with a 27.23 over Blaum’s 27.27.

Christina Lappin of Gamecock Aquatics picked up third with a 27.53, while ABSC’s Caitlin Casazza grabbed fourth with a 27.79.

SwimMAC teammatess Sophie Lindner (27.90), Katie Corbi (27.97), Julia Menkhaus (28.00) made it through to the super semi-final round.

IA’s Abigail Dolan rounded out the top eight with a 28.06.

Men’s 50 Fly

Santiago Grassi of AU turned in a top time of 24.60 in the men’s 50 fly semi-finals. ABSC’s Camden Murphy and SwimMAC’s John Walker joined him under the 25-second mark with times of 24.71 and 24.82.

AAC’s Ryan Baker was fourth in semi-finals with a 25.03, just ahead of Alvin Jiang’s 25.05.

SwimMAC’s Boyd Poelke (25.23), AU’s Mcfoster Ballard (25.29), and Wolfpack’s James Bretscher (25.44) completed the top eight.

Women’s 50 Back

Wolfpack’s Elise Haan posted the only sub-29 second time of the evening at a 28.57. Fellow Wolfpack team members Mackenzie Glover (29.44) and Alexia Zevnik (29.45) qualified third and fourth, while Grace Countie of the Marlins of Raleigh took second with a 29.30.

BLUE’s Abigail Richter posted a 29.52 to qualify fifth, followed by SwimMAC’s Madelyn Flickinger’s 29.70.

Wolfpack’s Danika Huizinga and ATOM’s Eliza Whitmire collected seventh and eighth with times of 29.87 and 30.03.

Men’s 50 Back

The Wolfpack made their presence known in the men’s 50 back semi-finals, claiming the first through fourth place qualifying spots. Justin Ress led the charge with the only sub-26 second time, stopping the clock at a 25.68. Teammates Coleman Stewart (26.13), Hennessey Stuart (26.23), and Jacob Molacek (26.38) finished close behind.

Duke’s Maximillian St. George qualified fifth with a 26.46, while CAV’s John Whiteside posted a 26.81 for sixth.

The Wolfpack concluded the top eight qualifiers with Cobe Garcia (27.06) and Mark McGlaughlin (27.23) collecting seventh and eighth.

Women’s 50 Breast

Kaylee Hamblin of MSA collected the top seed in semi-finals of the women’s 50 breast, posting a time of 32.19. Rachel Bernhardt of Gamecock Aquatics picked up a close second-place seed with a 32.36, followed closely by Wolfpack’s Olivia Calegan (32.42) and YOTA’s Jacalyn Schoening (32.43).

WAVE’s Miikaela Fullerton turned in a 32.84 for fifth, while Allyson Reiter took sixth with a 32.91.

Anna Shumate of Wolfpack Elite and Caitlin Casazza of Athen’s Bulldogs completed the qualifiers with times of 33.05 and 33.12.

Men’s 50 Breast

SwimMAC teammates Timothy Connery and William Chan delivered a 1-2 punch in semi-finals of the men’s 50 breast with times of 28.67 and 28.88.

Itay Goldfaden of Gamecock Aquatics picked up the third-place seed with a 28.90, followed closely by PKV’s Marko Blazevski (28.97) and TE’s Austin Rednour (29.01).

Athen’s Bulldogs’ Colin Monaghan (29.28), SwimMAC’s Nic Eriksson (29.29), and Nils Wich-Glasen (29.35) rounded out the top eight.

Women’s 50 Free

SwimMAC sprint veteran Madison Kennedy claimed the top seed in the women’s 50 free semi-finals. Kennedy powered to a 25.54, while Athen’s Bulldogs’ Veronica Burchill (25.69) and Gamecock’s Christina Lappin (25.93) joined her under the 26-second mark.

Alexia Zevnik of Wolfpack Elite and NCAC’s Brooke Bauer delivered matching times of 26.01 to tie for fourth, followed by another tie between Wolfpack teammates Ky-lee Perry and Sirena Rowe at 26.09.

Alyssa Tetzloff of AU was eighth with a 26.11.

Men’s 50 Free

Aaron Greenberg, swimming unattached, topped the semi-finals of the men’s splash and dash, stopping the clock at a 23.03.

Wolfpack’s Jacob Molacek and Alvin Jiang posted matching times of 23.33, followed closely by AAC’s Ryan Baker and his time of 23.37.

John Long (23.41), Oliver Smith (23.42), PKV’s Marko Blazevski (23.70), and Wolfpack’s Coleman Stewart (23.85) also qualified for tomorrow’s super semi-finals.
