Joao Gomes Climbs 100 Breast World Rankings at Brazilian Nationals

The 2017 Brazilian National Championships, also known as the Maria Lenk Trophy meet, splashed into action today in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Women’s 100 Fly

Daiene Marcal Dias flew to victory in the women’s 100 fly finals, stopping the clock at a 58.98. Dias’ time falls just shy of the top 20 world rankings for 2017, where 20th currently sits at a 58.73 from China’s Shuang LiDaynara Ferreira Paula turned in the second fastest time of the evening at a 59.07 to be the only other swimmer beneath the one minute mark. Giovanna Tomanik rounded out the podium with a 1:00.48.

All three athletes posted times beneath the FINA ‘B’ qualifying time standard of 1:00.53.

Men’s 100 Fly

Henrique de Souza Martins maintained his spot atop the competition with a 51.82 showing in the men’s 100 fly. Martins’ time propels him to fifth in the world rankings for 2017, with only .01 seconds separating him from Aussie David Morgan.

Vinicius Lanza touched second overall with a 52.02, placing both him and Martins beneath FINA’s ‘A’ cut time of 52.29. Kaio Marcio de Almeida completed the top three with a time of 52.86.

Women’s 400 Free

Joanna Maranhao jumped to an early lead in finals of the women’s 400 free and never looked back. Maranhao led the race from start-to-finish, stopping the clock at a 4:09.41 for first. Maranhao’s time sits just beneath the FINA ‘A’ cut of 4:10.57, earning her a qualifying spot on the World Championships team.

Viviane Eichelberger held steady at second throughout the race, finishing with a 4:12.38, while Poliana Okimoto was third overall with a 4:14.12. Both athletes touched below the FINA ‘B’ standard of 4:19.34.

Men’s 400 Free

Guilherme da costa turned in the top time in the men’s 400 free, posting a final time of 3:49.49 for the gold. While his time missed the FINA ‘A’ cut of 3:48.15, it did fall well beneath the FINA ‘B’ cut of 3:56.14.

Giuliano Carer Rocco and Luiz Altamir Lopes Melo tied for second in the 400, as the two delivered matching times of 3:50.49.

Women’s 100 Breast

Macarena Ailen Ceballos and Julia Sebastian delivered a tight race in finals of the women’s 100 breast, finishing .05 seconds apart. Despite an early lead from Sebastian, Ceballos pulled even and ahead to out-touch her 1:08.00 to 1:08.05. The two swimmers claimed FINA ‘B’ cuts along with their gold and silver medals.

Jhennifer Alves Conceicao completed the top three with a time of 1:08.43.

Men’s 100 Breast

Joao Luiz Gomes Junior topped the competition in the men’s 100 breast, posting the only sub-minute time at a 59.41. His time moves him to fourth in the world rankings for 2017 behind Adam Peaty (57.79), Zibei Yan (58.92), and Yasuhiro Koseki (59.26).

Felipe Lima touched second overall with a 1:00.05, while third was picked up by Pedro Cardona and his time of 1:00.12.

All three athletes finished beneath the FINA ‘A’ standard of 1:00.35.

You missed morning results Felipe Lima went 59,32 on 100 breast and Henrique Martins 51,57 on 100 fly.
