Jaspeado, Saum Dominate 400 IM on Night Two of Cleveland Sectionals

It was a fast second day of the 2018 Speedo Sectionals Series – Cleveland in Cleveland, Ohio. Co-hosted by the Firestone Akron Swim Team and the Hudson Explores Aquatic Team, the meet will run from July 19-22 at Cleveland State’s Busbey Natatorium.

Women’s 50 Back

After finishing sixth in last night’s 200 back, Ohio State’s Rebekah Bradley found herself on top of the podium tonight in the 50 back. She sprinted to the wall in a final time of 29.64.

The Buckeyes took gold and silver in this event as Devin Landstra finished second in 29.87. Club Wolverine’s Claire Young also snuck under the 30-second barrier to finish third in 29.98.

Men’s 50 Back

Ohio State’s Jacob Eismann won a close men’s 50 back race, powering home to win the event in 26.35. His time during finals was half a second faster than his morning swim.

RJ Kondalski, who will head off to Ohio State this fall, finished second in 26.45 while his future teammate Colin McDermott took third in 26.75.

Women’s 200 Free

A day after winning the women’s 200 back, Ohio State’s Mikayla Murphy found herself with the gold medal again, this time in the 200 free. She dropped half a second from her previous best time to win in a final time of 2:04.03.

Big Ten rival Katie Duggan of Club Wolverine dropped well over a second from her prelims swim to take the silver in 2:04.53 while Ohio State’s Kerrigan Vargo grabbed the bronze in 2:04.61.

Men’s 200 Free

Cincinnati Marlins’ Justin Grender added a win in the men’s 200 free to his runner-up finish in the 50 free last night. Grender, who will swim for Virginia this upcoming fall, knocked off over two seconds from this morning to post a final time of 1:52.41.

He had to hold off a charging Ryan Vandermeulen of Ohio State who took a close second in 1:52.64. EGRA Christian Bart swam a lifetime best by nearly six seconds to place third in 1:53.25.

Women’s 100 Fly

Club Wolverine’s Claire Maiocco dominated the women’s 100 fly, winning the event by two seconds. She posted a new lifetime best of 1:01.39 for the victory.

Firestone Akron’s Morgan Waggoner cruised to second in 1:03.37 while PHST Gabrielle Brust took a close third in 1:03.42.

Men’s 100 Fly

Cincinnati Marlins’ Aaron Taske won a competitive men’s 100 fly final, getting his hands to the wall first in 55.02. His time of 54.95 was a personal best by nearly two seconds.

Ohio State’s Henrique Painhas finished second in 55.62 while his teammate Alex Dillman was right behind him to place third in 55.65.

Women’s 400 IM

Ohio State’s Natalia Jaspeado stood on top of the podium in the women’s 400 IM after knocking off almost six seconds from her morning swim. She stopped the clock in 4:55.64.

Hudson Explorer’s Paige McCormick used a strong freestyle leg to get her to the wall second in 4:56.23. Firestone Akron’s Jaclyn Pash dropped three seconds from her prelims time to finish third in 4:49.50 as the last swimmer under the five-minute mark.

Men’s 400 IM

Swimming in a stacked field among talented college swimmers, three club swimmers swept the podium. Taking first place was Firestone Akron’s Jack Saum, who swam a six-second lifetime best of 4:31.42 to win the event by three seconds.

Fifteen-year-old Alex Podrez shaved off a few tenths to finish second overall in 4:34.43 while Lakeview’s Mark Lang, who is committed to swim for Kenyon, posted a best time of 4:36.76 for third.

Women’s 4×100 Free Relay

Ohio State’s Taylor Petrak (56.91), Freya Rayner, Vargo (58.23) and Devin Landstra (57.73) won the women’s 4×100 relay by well over three seconds in a time of 3:51.04.

Firestone Akron raced to second in 3:54.77 and Club Wolverine finished third in 3:59.14.

Men’s 4×100 Free Relay

Ohio State’s Vandermeulen (51.93), Michael Lynch (52.18), Carson Burt (52.81) and Mateo Chavez (51.14) combined to win the day’s final event in 3:28.06.

Cincinnati Marlins finished second in 3:29.36 while Ohio State B took third in 3:31.15.

Prelims for the third day of competition will begin at 9:00 a.m. EST.
