HONOLULU, Hawaii, February 17. PUNAHOU High School senior Jasmine Mau blistered the 100-yard fly at the Hawaiian High School State Championships with a national independent school record this weekend, which along with a seriously strong effort throughout the meet, helped Punahou to victory in the women’s team race. Punahou High’s boys team also scored a team title in an epic sweep.

Mau posted a swift time of 52.23, that downed her 2013 state mark of 52.78. It also lowered the independent school record of 52.44 set by Kathleen Hersey back in 2008, but fell short of the overall and public school mark of 51.92 set by Jasmine Tosky during prelims in California in 2011.

Mau also was part of two relays. Punahou’s Lie Foster, Maddie Balish, Mau and Roxy Kiessling clocked a 1:43.77 in the 200-yard medley relay to break their school’s 2007 state mark of 1:44.03. She then leadoff the team of Mau, Kelly Fricke, Katie Woof and Foster to a 3:30.33 to win the 400-yard free relay. That swim whacked three seconds off Waiakea’s 2002 record of 3:33.49.

She also blasted Christel Simms’ 2007 state record of 1:49.25 in the 200-yard free with a scorching 1:47.14.

Meanwhile, Kealakehe’s Cara Jernigan topped the 200-yard IM in a time of 2:04.80, winning by nearly four seconds. That’s still well off Mau’s state record of 2:01.78 from last year, but Mau is event-limited.

Iolani’s Aja Grande then gave Keiko Price’s 1994 state record of 23.26 a serious run, but fell short with a 23.31 to win the 50-yard free. Grande doubled up with a sprint freestyle sweep when she clocked a 51.13 in the 100-yard freestyle.

Mid-Pacific’s Rebecca Walton cleared 5:00 with a 4:59.68 to win the 500-yard freestyle, beating the rest of the field by more than three seconds. Walton then helped Mid-Pacific to a relay triumph. Mid-Pacific’s Lena Hayakawa, Maia Petrides, Walton and Summer Harrison closed out the 200-yard freestyle finale with a winning time of 1:37.50.

Punahou freshman Lia Foster (57.20) then won an exciting 100-yard backstroke title, touching out Kauai’s Yasmine Ware, who placed second in 57.23. Kealakehe’s Cara Jernigan followed up with a 1:02.41 to down her state record of 1:03.14 from prelims of the 100-yard breast.

As far as the boys championship meet, it came down to a two-point victory for Punahou against Kamehameha, 49-47.

Kamehameha opened the night with a 1:37.37 from Ryan Stack, Colin-James Fellezs, Kanoa Kaleoaloha and David Kea Jr to win the 200-yard medley relay. Stack followed up with a 1:38.22 to top the 200-yard free after setting a state record with a 1:37.83 in prelims. Stack continued his strong outing with a 4:30.96 to win the 500-yard freestyle.

Baldwin’s Jonah Hu had a dominant swim in the 200-yard IM with a time of 1:53.51, while Maui Prep’s Sky Hirsch touched out Kaleoaloha, 20.57 to 20.64, in the 50-yard free. Both times came up just short of Daniel Coakley’s 2007 state record of 20.46. Hu later doubled up with a 55.72 to break the state record in the 100-yard breast . That swim bettered Austin Hirstein’s 55.91 from 2013.

Mililani’s Kevin Frifeldt pushed the pace in the 100-yard fly to win the event in 48.99, before Kaleoaloha responded with a 45.65 to top the 100-yard free. That time fell half-a-second off Mick Borreca’s 2001 state record of 45.24.

Punahou’s Sam Sutherland, TJ Dawson, Jed Johnson and Zack Woo hit the wall in 1:26.10 to capture the 200-yard free relay crown.

Campbell’s Makoa Alvarez tied the state record in the 100-yard back with a 49.79. That swim matched the 49.79 posted by Mark Eckert of Iolani back in 2004.

Punahou’s Noah Deer, Zack Woo, TJ Dawson and Sam Sutherland closed out the meet with a 3:06.86 to win the 400-yard free relay. That swim nearly eclipsed the state record of 3:06.69 set by Kamehamaha a year ago.
