Heat sheets for this weekend’s 2018 Texas High School swimming and diving state championship meets have been released, and some close races are set in both divisions. After a record setting meet for the 6A girls last year, only time will tell how much faster some of these swimmers can go.

Girls

A freshman, Ana Herceg of Pflugerville Weiss, has the top seed in the 200 freestyle. The 100 backstroke also has a ninth grader in the top spot: Kaitlyn Owens of A&M Consolidated.

Nacogdoches senior Jesse Stovall leads the way in the 50 freestyle. She’s also second seed in the 100, behind Boerne Champion’s Brittney Pike. Two girls are entered under five minutes in the 500 free: Lucas Lovejoy’s Raime Jones and Frisco Lone Star’s Joelle Reddin.

Boys

Dallas Highland Park senior Felix Van Cauwelaert is top seed in the 200 free and also seeded to final in the 500 free. Austin’s Will Barton has the top spot in the longer freestyle event.

David Hallaron, a senior from Grapevine, has a three second lead over the field entering the 200 IM. He’s second seed in the 100 back behind A&M Consolidated’s Peter Simmons– also the 100 fly top seed.

Jack Armstrong has the fastest entry in the 100 freestyle. The Manvel junior is also first seed in the 50 free.

Girls

At last year’s meet eventual World Championship team member Dakota Luther broke Olympian Dana Vollmer‘s state record in the 100 fly. The Austin Westlake senior is third seed in that event this year, and will look to lower her mark before heading to the University of Georgia in the fall.

Luther will also swim the 200 free. Also in that event is Lucie Nordmann, the Conroe Woodlands senior. The Stanford bound swimmer‘s second event will be the 100 backstroke. Nordmann’s sophomore sister Lillie will race the 200 IM and 100 fly.

At last year’s meet Conroe the Woodlands narrowly beat Austin Westlake for the team title, and the Nordmann duo should be key to a repeat championship. Their sophomore teammate Valerie Anne Staffeldt is top seed in the 50 free, and seeded to final in the 100 as well.

McKinney Boyd’s Vanessa Pearl, a Florida commit, is the 200 IM top seed and second in the 100 breaststroke. Montgomery junior Kaitlynn Sims is top seed in the 500 free by nine seconds.

Boys

Southlake Carroll had a decisive victory last year. The team returns superstar and Stanford commit Jack LeVant, the top seed in the 200 and 500 free.

Soon to be Texas A&M Aggie Clayton Bobo of Houston Stratford leads the way in the 50 and 100 free.

Belton senior Noah Henry has the top spot in the 100 fly, just ahead of McAllen’s Shaine Casas. Casas has the fastest 100 backstroke entry time. Midland’s Braden Vines has the quickest 100 breaststroke.
