ISL Match Eight: Sarah Sjostrom Making Surprise Return; Kyle Chalmers Set For Solo Action

The eighth match of the International Swimming League (ISL) season will offer some intriguing matchups when Energy Standard, the London Roar, L.A. Current and Tokyo Frog Kings go to work in Naples. The meet will be held Saturday and Sunday, with Sarah Sjostrom returning to action for Energy Standard and Kyle Chalmers making his individual-race season debut for London.

After racing during the early portion of the regular season, Sjostrom left her team and indicated she would not compete for Energy Standard until the postseason while she strengthened the elbow she fractured earlier in the year. However, Sjostrom’s name appears on the start lists for the eighth match of the season, including in a showdown in the 50 freestyle with Australian and London Roar star Emma McKeon.

In the 50 freestyle, the Current’s Abbey Weitzeil is a threat to Sjostrom and McKeon, making the race – perhaps – the most-anticipated showdown of the first session. McKeon is also slated to race in the 100 butterfly, an event in which she won the bronze medal at the Olympic Games.

As for Chalmers, he raced for the Roar in their last match, but only in relay duty. Coming off a silver medal in the 100 freestyle at the Olympic Games in Tokyo, Chalmers is entered in the 50 freestyle for his squad’s latest match. Additionally, the Roar’s Duncan Scott is slated to battle with the Frog Kings’ Daiya Seto in the 200 individual medley.
