Isabel Gose Adds Her Name to Germany’s Olympic Roster With 200 Free Win in Berlin

Isabel Gose added her name to Germany’s Olympic roster on Friday at the Olympic qualification meet in Berlin as the German Swimming Federation has targeted more than one meets as qualification for the Games in Tokyo this summer. Gose won the 200 freestyle at 1:56.93 ahead of Annika Bruhn (1:57.17) as they were both under the 1:57.20 Olympic standard. Germany already has a 4×200 free relay qualified for Tokyo as Leonie Kullmann (1:57.64) was third and Marie Pietruschka (1:58.46) was fourth.

In the men’s race, Lukas Martens got under the qualifying standard with a 1:46.41 ahead of Jacob Heidtmann (1:46.98) and Poul Zellmann (1:47.53). Henning Muhlleitner (1:48.11) finished in fourth place as those four could potentially make up Germany’s 4×200 free relay come this summer.

Texas freshman Anna Elendt added her name to contention to Germany’s Olympic roster with a win in the 100 breaststroke.

Although Elendt did not achieve the German Olympic standard in the 100 breaststroke, she put herself in contention for the German 4×100 medley relay. Elendt, who just finished her freshman year at the University of Texas in the United States, won the 100 breast at 1:07.17, off the standard of 1:07.00 set by the federation.

Lisa Hopink won the women’s 100 butterfly with a 58.07 to also put herself for contention for a relay spot while Laura Riedemann qualified individually for the 100 back (59.85) by getting under 1:00.

On the men’s side of things, Ole Braunschweig won the 100 back at 53.87 ahead of Marek Ulrich (53.99) and ISL star Christian Diener (54.24). Braunschweig was the only one under the Olympic standard.

Fabian Schwingenschlogl, who is already on the Olympic team for Germany, won the 100 breast at 59.30 ahead of Lucas Matzerath (59.42) and ISL star Marco Koch (1:00.28). Koch should have a strong 200 breast later in the meet as he was the gold medal favorite heading into Rio five years ago where he ultimately ended up in seventh.

Marius Kusch won the 100 butterfly with a 51.75, under the Olympic standard, as the San Diego based swimmer won ahead of Ramon Klenz (52.82). Germany has qualified a men’s medley relay and looks to have at least one representative in each of the four 100s of strokes.

Two of the stars ahead of Tokyo for Germany, Sarah Kohler and Florian Wellbrock, who announced their engagement in December, took care of business in their respective distances. Kohler won the 1500 at 15:52.20 and Wellbrock won the 800 at 7:48.12. Kohler won the silver in the 1500 at the 2019 Worlds while Wellbrock was World champ in the 1500 in 2019.
