Iowa Swimming & Diving Sweeps Big Ten Weekly Honors

The University of Iowa women’s swimming and diving team swept the Big Ten Conference weekly honors, it was announced Wednesday by the league office. Kelsey Drake was named the Swimmer of the Week, Jayah Mathews the Diver of the Week, and Sam Tamborski the Freshman of the Week.

The sweep came on the heels of the Hawkeyes’ 162-138 Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series victory over Iowa State on Dec. 7.  It was Iowa’s ninth straight win over the Cyclones and the victory clinched a Hawkeye win in annual series between the two schools.

Drake, a sophomore from Marion, Iowa, won three individual events and was part of Iowa’s runner-up 200-medley relay in the dual against Iowa State.  She won the 100 fly (53.64), 200 fly (1:58.68), and 200 IM (2:02.56), posting NCAA “B” qualifying times in both butterfly events.

It is the second career weekly accolade for Drake, as she was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week on Dec. 13, 2017.

Mathews, a sophomore from Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, earned her second Big Ten Diver of the Week honor of the season (fourth of her career) after sweeping the springboard competitions against the Cyclones. She posted NCAA Zone Diving standards in both events, finishing with a 315.35 off the 1-meter and 343.05 off the 3-meter.  Mathews has swept the springboard events in four competitions this season.

Tamborski, a freshman from Castle Rock, Colorado, earned her first career weekly honor after finishing as the runner-up off the 3-meter and third off the 1-meter.  She finished with a score of 321.10 off the 3-meter and a career-best 294.05 off the 1-meter. Both scores were NCAA Zone Diving standards.

Iowa divers return to action Dec. 21 at the USA Diving World Trials in Atlanta.  Following the team’s training trip to Florida, the Hawkeye women are back in the pool Jan. 11, traveling to Champaign for a Big Ten dual at Illinois.
