Grace Bennin Posts 1:00 100 Breast State Record as Middleton Three-Peats at Wisconsin Girls DI States

The 2018 Wisconsin Girls Division I State Swimming & Diving Championships took place on Nov. 10 at the University of Wisconsin campus in Madison.

Middleton dominated the meet with 249.5 points to win their third-straight team title, edging out Cedarburg (188) and Sun Prairie (170). Verona Area/Mount Horeb senior Grace Bennin, who is off to Minnesota next fall, broke a seven-year-old State record in the 100 breast to highlight the meet.

The meet began as Verona Area/Mount Horeb’s Sara Stewart, Bennin, Josie McCartney and Kenzie Zuehl combined to win the 4×50 medley relay in 1:43.34. Middleton took second in 1:44.08 and Brookfield East finished third in 1:44.81.

Not too long after helping Verona Area/Mount Horeb to relay victory, Bennin got the individual win in the 200 IM as the only swimmer under the two-minute mark with a fast 1:59.93 to defend her title. Second went to Bay Port’s Emma Lasecki (2:02.10) and third belonged to Kenosha Indian Trail’s Trinity Gilbert (2:03.51).

Bennin then went on to win the 100 breast, getting her hands to the wall first in a quick 1:00.65 to defend her title. Her time broke the previous Wisconsin State record of 1:01.72 set by Sami Pochowski back in 2011. Middleton’s Ally Silvestri was second in 1:02.41 and Cedarburg’s Brigid Gwidt took third in 1:03.32.

Menomonee Falls/Hamilton’s Cassie Stegner was the only swimmer in the field to crack the two-minute barrier in the 200 free, doing so in 1:49.21 to defend her title. Middleton’s Hannah Aegerter powered her way to second in 1:52.36 and a close third place went to Waukesha West/Catholic Memorial’s Alivia Farber in 1:52.38.

Sun Prairie’s Sophie Fiske splashed and dashed her way to a State title in the 50 free with a time of 23.20. Cedarburg teammates Erika Remington (23.47) and Maya Novack (23.66) finished second and third, respectively.

Shortly after an impressive 50 Fiske was back at it again, this time winning the gold in the 100 free with a swift 50.35. Stegner was a half-second behind to grab the silver in 50.84 as Novack again earned the bronze in 51.35.

The 100 fly win went to Brookfield East’s Reilly Tiltmann who got her hands to the wall first in a quick 54.56. Madison West’s Katrin Marty took a close second in 54.62 as Lasecki powered home to third in 54.86.

Tiltman then went on to win her second event of the meet, this time taking the 100 back in 54.62. Marty took a close second-place finish in 54.76 as Stevens Point’s Kennedy Gilbertson finished third in 55.50.

Aegerter found herself on top of the podium in the 500 free, shaving off five seconds from her seed time to win in 4:55.48. Waukesha South/Mukwonago’s Abby Carlson also dipped under five minutes with a second-place finish of 4:58.63 and third went to Middleton’s Makenna Licking (5:03.09).

The Middleton 4×50 relay squad of Gabriela Pierobon MaysBerkeley Smith, Aegerter and Licking swam away with the State title after combining to post a time of 1:34.24, over one seconds ahead of runner-up Verona Area/Mount Horeb (1:35.61) and Sun Prairie (1:35.87).

Neenah’s Av Osero dove to the top spot on the 1-meter board for the second-straight year after posting a final score 515.20. Racine Case’s McKenzie Sanchez finished second with 493.45 points and Arrowhead’s Alexis Woida took third with a score of 465.25.

The meet concluded with a Sun Prairie victory in the 4×100 free relay as the quartet of Michaela Nelson, Bree Moericke, Janelle Schulz and Fiske posted a winning time of 3:26.55. Cedarburg secured second in 3:26.98 and Brookfield East wound up third in 3:28.57.
