NEW COMMIT: George Washington University has gained a huge commitment for the upcoming 2019-20 season from Greek breaststroker George Aspougalis.

Aspougalis, who does his club swimming with Hellenic Aquatics, owns the Greek National Age Group Record in both the 50m and 100m breast. A member of Greece’s Junior National Team, he has represented his country at European Junior Championships, ISF Gymnasiade and Multi-nations Swimming Championships. A current senior at Thessaloniki High School, he most recently earned gold in the 50m breast and silver in the 100m breast at Multi-nation Juniors.

He told Swimming World:

“When an International Student Athlete makes a College decision it is not for the next four years only but a decision for life.  I have been fortunate with this opportunity and thrilled to join George Washington University and Coach’s Thomas’ Swimming program because it combines in the most harmonious way Academics and Swimming.  Since the early stages of recruiting I felt very welcomed and I strongly believe that everyone at GWU will help me to develop further at a much higher level.”

In LCM, his best times include:

  • 50 breast – 28.19
  • 100 breast – 1:02.79
  • 200 breast – 2:17.74

In SCY, those times convert to:

  • 50 breast – 24.49
  • 100 breast – 54.76
  • 200 breast – 2:00.48

Aspougalis will make an immediate impact when he arrives in Washington, D.C. as a member of the class of 2023. He would’ve scored in the A-final of both breaststroke events at the 2019 Atlantic-10 Conference Championships where the Colonials earned their third-straight team title.
