GB Trials, Day 2 Heats: 100 Back Duo Dawson & Wild Go 59; Renshaw Leads 200Br In 2:23.81

Kathleen Dawson and Cassie Wild both went inside the 100 back consideration time for Team GB at the second heats session of the British Swimming Selection Trials.

The pair will need to do a repeat in the evening finals at the London Aquatics Centre with both women looking smooth and comfortable.

Molly Renshaw booked lane four for the 200br two months after matching the British record with team-mate and training partner Abbie Wood alongside her at the London Aquatics Centre.

Joe Litchfield, Luke Greenbank and James Guy also negotiated their way into Thursday evening’s finals.

Men’s 200 : Guy Flies Into Lane Four

James Guy was fastest into the final after two heats comprising just 11 swimmers.

The two-time Olympic relay silver medallist stopped the clock at 1:57.82 ahead of Jay Lelliott who booked lane five in a PB of 1:58.37.

Guy switched coach from Jol Finck to Dave McNulty at Bath National Centre following 2019 worlds, a move that is clearly benefiting the swimmer who is producing his most consistent sets in training and is ready to book his spot at his second Games.

Ed Mildred – who won three golds and two silvers at the 2019 European Youth Olympic Festival – was next through in 2:01.02.

Women’s 100 Backstroke; Dawson And Wild Book Centre Lanes

Kathleen Dawson – who became the second British woman inside 59secs when she went 58.65 at the British Swimming Invitation Meet in Manchester last month – heads into lane four for tonight’s final.

Dawson went fourth European all-time last month with Kira Toussaint moving alongside her last week in Eindhoven.

She was in the third and final heat having watched her University of Stirling team-mate Cassie Wild produce the smoothest and most comfortable 59.88 imaginable.

Dawson split 28.61/30.55 to book lane four in 59.16 as both she and Wild went inside the consideration time of 60.2.

Repeat that in finals and the pair will be heading for Tokyo.

Medi Harris (1:00.95) and Georgia Davies (1:01.34) were next through.

Men’s 100 Backstroke; Litchfield Brings It Back

Litchfield returned from his PB swim in the 200IM where he cut inside the consideration time behind Duncan Scott‘s British record of 1:55.90.

Photo Courtesy:Joe LitchfieldGreenbank has been pre-selected for Team GB which could have offered the Loughborough swimmer some relief after he sprained his left ankle while out walking.

The world 200 back bronze medallist was in the third heat and if he was affected it certainly wasn’t clear as he got his hand to the wall in 54.36.

While Litchfield and Greenbank booked the centre lanes, also through inside 55 were Brodie Williams (54.42) and Elliott Clogg (54.48).

Renshaw spearheads the final ahead of Loughborough team-mate and training partner Wood.

Renshaw, who was sixth in Rio, matched Jocelyn Ulyett’s British record of 2:22.08 at the Manchester International Swim Meet in February.

On Thursday, she clocked 2:23.81 with Wood – who narrowly missed the 200 free consideration time on Wednesday – way ahead in the second heat and touched in 2:24.03

Ulyett, who set the British record back in 2017, was next through in 2:26.11.

Chloe Tutton is not competing any more having retired, the Welshwoman finishing fourth in Rio, 0.06 off a podium that included Yulia Efimova.

Men’s 800 Free

All the 80o and 1500 free races will be heat-declared winners with Alexander Hindle doing a big PB of 8:18.73.

Women’s 800 Free

There were just three swimmers in the women’s race and all of them under 18 with Livia Kingsland  quickest in 9:14.66.
