Felix Auboeck Claims 800 Freestyle Win as Stockholm Open Wraps With Fast Times

For the third time at the Stockholm Open, Austrian Felix Auboeck has produced a performance worth noting ahead of this summer’s Olympic Games in Tokyo. With victories already earned in the 200 freestyle and 400 freestyle, Auboeck extended to the 800 freestyle on Sunday and came away with a triumph in 7:46.72.

A product of the University of Michigan, Auboeck evenly split the race, covering the opening 400 meters in 3:53.11 and coming home in 3:53.61. Earlier in the meet, he was sub-3:45 in the 400 freestyle and 1:45 in the 200 freestyle. He wasn’t the only swimmer to break eight minutes in the 800 free, as Denmark’s Anton Ipsen checked in with a time of 7:54.82.

The women’s 100 breaststroke featured three women under 1:07, led by 14-year-old Eneli Jefimova of Estonia. Jefimova got to the wall in 1:06.82, just ahead of the 1:06.84 of Sweden’s Sophie Hansson, the NCAA champion for North Carolina State, and the 1:06.88 of Finland’s Ida Hulkko.

A couple of days removed from entering the 56-second realm in the 100-meter butterfly, Louise Hansson added another victory to her ledger. A former star at the University of Southern California, Hansson led a tightly packed field in the 100 freestyle and ultimately prevailed by the slimmest of margins over Israel’s Andi Murez.

Hansson posted a time of 54.27, with Murez right behind in 54.28 and Sweden’s Michelle Coleman taking third place in 54.57. Murez had the lead at the midway point of the race, splitting 25.88 to the 26.27 of Hansson, but the Swedish star was stronger over the back half of the race and clipped at Murez at the finish.

Greece’s Andreas Vazaios, who won the 100 freestyle on Saturday, returned to one of his prime events on Sunday and won the 200 individual medley in 1:58.47, nearly a second ahead of runnerup Yakov Toumarkin of Israel, who was timed in 1:59.46. Vazaios’ countryman, Kristian Gkolomeev was the winner of the 50 freestyle in 21.97.

Already the winner of the 200 medley and 400 medley, Hungary’s Katinka Hosszu bested the field in the 200 butterfly, her time of 2:09.72 a bit quicker than the 2:09.87 of Denmark’s Helena Bach.
