Ema Rajic Sets Two State Records, Rosary Secures Illinois High School Title

Rosary walked away with 185.5 points and the team title at the 2016 Illinois High School state championship tonight. Loyola was runner up with 131 and Oswego E scored 120 for third. Three state records were also rewritten at the 2016 Championship.

Rosary powered their way to the state championship with wins in both freestyle relays. In the 200 freestyle relay Athena YeKathryn MuellerAlexis Yager, and Emily Ryan combined for a 1:34.37, just faster than New Trier’s Joelle OhrMadeleine HinesSophia Girgenti, and Lydia O’Connell (1:34.74) and Loyola’s Olivia Andrew, Cassidy Coughlin, Margaret Guanci, and Ella Tierney (1:34.87).

In the night’s final event (the 400 freestyle relay) Ryan, Mueller and Yager joined with Anne Tavierne to post a 3:25.25 for Rosary. A second behind was Loyola’s quartet of Coughlin, Andrew, Guanci, and Tierney. Oswego E earned bronze with Grace CooperEmily GilesMari Kraus, and Georgia White touching in 3:27.09.

Rosary claimed just one individual event: the 100 butterfly. Camryn Streid touched first in 55.39. She was followed by Loyola’s Andrew with a 55.51 and Lockport freshman Lindsey Merk in 55.56.

Oswego E’s White was a double event winner. The junior touched in 1:47.03 in the 200 freestyle. In prelims she stopped the clock in 1:46.69, breaking Kirsten Jacobsen‘s state record of 1:46.98. Tierney was on her heels with a 1:47.24 tonight. St. Charles’ Audrey Guyett rounded out the podium in 1:50.44.

White also won the 100 freestyle with a swift 50.13, after cracking the 50 second barrier with a 49.93 in prelims. Nata Ungaretti of Oak Park posted a 50.90 for silver. Bartlett senior Kayla Filipek was third in 51.18.

Another state record fell in the 200 IM. U Urbana’s Ema Rajic swam a 2:00.27. After swimming a 2:00.70 in prelims, she knocked down the 1998 record of 2:00.67. Rosary’s Yager was just off the old mark in 2:00.75. Kraus (2:02.64) finished third. Rajic also set the 100 breaststroke record. In prelims she touched in 1:00.90. At night she finished first with a 1:00.77. Both times were well under Ashley Wanland‘s 1:01.83 done in 2007. Behind her was Valerie Tarazi (1:02.90) of Crystal Lake and Waubonsie’s Hannah Hunt and Yager in a tie for third at 1:02.97.

Tierney won the 500 freestyle in 4:48.45. Guyett was second (4:50.97) and Metamora’s Noel Peplowski (4:51.13) placed third. Edwardsville’s Bailey Grinter topped the 100 backstroke podium with a54.36. Dunlap’s Emma Theobald was second in 55.08 and Loyola’s Shannon Kearney picked up third with a 55.42.

With 452.55 points New Trier’s Jessie Creed won the one meter diving. Evanston’s Lucy Hogan (449.40) and Sterling’s Kallie Zuidema (444.75) were second and third.

Oak Park’s Hanna BlankemeierAlexandra GillSamantha Neilson, and Natalie Ungaretti opened the session with a 1:43.94 to win the 200 medley relay. New Trier’s Vivian WuSara NicholasKasey Venn, and Lydia O’Connell (1:44.25) took second. Two hundredths back Neuqua Valley’s Eyli ErlechmanAmanda BrockmeierKayleigh Cannon, and Kristen Stege were third in 1:44.27.
