Duke University head swimming and diving coach Dan Colella announced Thursday the addition of Josh Stanfield to the Blue Devil coaching staff. Stanfield joins Duke as an assistant coach following a successful tenure at Gardner-Webb.

“We are thrilled to have Josh Stanfield joining our staff,” Colella said. “Josh will bring a lot of energy and experience to aid us in our quest of academic and athletic excellence. I am confident he will be able to assist us in recruiting the finest student-athletes to Duke University.”

Stanfield brings a wealth of coaching experience to Durham, having spent the past six seasons with the Runnin’ Bulldogs. He previously served as an assistant coach before being elevated to the role of associate head coach for the 2017-18 campaign. Stanfield was also integral to Gardner-Webb’s recruiting efforts.

During his final year in Boiling Springs, Stanfield oversaw a squad that produced three Coastal Collegiate Sports Association (CCSA) titles – two in relay events and one individual – and five NCAA ‘B’ cuts. The 2016-17 season was also a strong one for Gardner-Webb under Stanfield’s supervision, resulting in four individual CCSA champions, 10 program records, 16 All-CCSA selections and 41 Academic All-CCSA honorees.

“I am excited to join coaches Dan, Dawn [Kane] and Doak [Finch] at Duke, and begin contributing to the amazing culture and program that has been established there in Durham,” Stanfield said. “I am looking forward to working with current and future Blue Devils! Go Duke!”

Stanfield’s previous coaching experience includes time as a volunteer assistant coach at his alma mater, Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas. At Southwestern, he was part of a coaching staff that helped the Pirates achieve 14 school records, one NCAA qualifier and one conference champion. Stanfield also held an age group coaching position at Texas-based Nitro Swimming, serving as the primary coach for several individual state champions.

A native of Huntsville, Texas, Stanfield graduated from Southwestern in 2011 with a bachelor’s degree in kinesiology.
