Drexel Hires Nathan Lavery as Head Coach of Swimming and Diving Teams

Drexel Thursday announced the hiring of Nathan Lavery as head coach of the team’s men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams.

Lavery, a native of South Africa, spent the last two seasons as an assistant coach at TCU. He led the Horned Frogs’ sprint and stroke contingents, helping TCU’s men’s and women’s team each finish third at the Big 12 championships last year.

“I am truly humbled and honored to have the opportunity to lead Drexel University Swimming and Diving,” Lavery said in a university statement. “My wife Amy and I are thrilled to be a part of this great institution and what it stands for. We have great appreciation for Dr. Eric Zillmer’s vision for Drexel University’s place in the ever-changing landscape of college athletics. This is a university that already provides a life-changing student-athlete experience, and our team will strive to continue that excellence both in and out of the pool.”

Lavery is familiar with the Philadelphia area, having spent five seasons as an assistant coach at Villanova, where he was part of four straight Big East women’s championships. He’s also coached at Georgia Tech and began at his alma mater, Texas A&M. Lavery coached age-groupers at West Houston Aquatics.

The 2011 graduate of the Aggies earned All-America status on relays and was a regular Big 12 finalist.

Lavery is the 11th coach of the men’s program and the seventh of the women’s. Adam Braun had led the program for the last six seasons. The Drexel men finished third at the CAA Championships in 2020, with the women in fourth.

We are excited to have Nathan on board and we are looking forward to the growth of the men’s and women’s swimming & diving programs under Nathan’s tenure.”
