Drew Kibler Posts 50 Free National HS Public Record…Maybe?

Drew Kibler of Carmel High School is no stranger to posting fast times, owning Indiana state, National High School Public, and National Age Group records across a series of events, and tonight was no exception.

While swimming in prelims of the 50 free at the 2018 Indiana Boys High School State Championships, Kibler sprinted to a stunning 19.38 in the individual event. A feat that is regarded by many as a new National High School Public record, having bypassed Vladimir Morozov’s 19.43 from 2010.

But there exists another name and time in the national record mix: Caeleb Dressel’s 19.29.

In 2013, Dressel provided the lead off leg for Claypool High School’s 200 free relay, producing a stunning 19.29 split that many regarded as the new National High School Public record. But approximately five years later, the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) still recognizes Morozov’s 19.43 as the national record, while multiple swimming publications (including Swimming World, SwimSwam, and SwimVortex) recognize Dressel’s 19.29.

But why?

The general consensus comes down to the exact circumstances that the times were produced under, i.e. the event in question. Both Morozov and Kibler produced their dazzling times while swimming in the individual 50 free event, while Dressel’s dazzling time was included as a member of a relay team.

Regardless of the circumstances, Kibler’s swim stands as one of the fastest 50 free’s ever swum and he deserves recognition for his impressive swim. And with a fresh finals session ahead of him, Kibler could very well clear the air himself by dipping beneath Dressel’s 19.29 and eliminating any questions regarding the owner of the record.
