Drew Kibler Drops Impressive 200 Free in Early Duel With Texas Teammate Carson Foster

After opening the Texas First Chance Invitational with brilliant performances in their respective events, intrigue built over the impending clash between University of Texas teammates Drew Kibler and Carson Foster in the 200-yard freestyle. On Saturday, Kibler dominantly took the upper hand in the matchup at the Lee and Joe Jamail Swim Center in Austin.

As part of a tri-meet also featuring Texas A&M and Southern Methodist, Kibler delivered the 18th-fastest time in the history of the 200 free when he stopped the clock in 1:31.10. That mark was not far off his personal best of 1:30.83, posted last December. Foster was the runnerup, but his 1:33.41 was well back of his teammate.

Kibler set the stage for a strong 200 freestyle when he won the 500 freestyle on Friday night in 4:08.26, the fourth-fastest time ever recorded. In the 200 free, Kibler wasted little time taking control, as he immediately surged to the lead behind a 50 split of 20.92 and a 100 split of 43.77. Kibler made the 150 turn in 1:07.09 and came home in 24.01.

Like Kibler, Foster was coming off a superb performance from Friday night. On the first day of the meet, the freshman standout established a National Age Group (NAG) record in the 17-18 category in the 400 individual medley. Foster won that event in 3:35.27, which trails only Chase Kalisz’s marks of 3:33.42 and 3:34.50 on the all-time list.

In other action, the Longhorns’ Daniel Krueger won the 100 freestyle in 42.33 while freshman David Johnston put together an impressive showing of 14:47.75 in the 1650 free. Alvin Jiang handed Texas a win in the 100 butterfly (45.75). A&M received a first-place outing from Andres Puente in the 200 breaststroke, as his time of 1:53.26 bettered the 1:53.84 of Texas’ Caspar Corbeau.
