Dimond, Service Take Alaska High School Team Crowns

ANCHORAGE, Alaska. DIMOND High School won the boys’ team title while service took the girls’ crown at the ASAA/First National Bank 2000 Alaska State High School Swimming and Diving Championships, held in Anchorage, November 10-11.

In the boys’ division, Dimond racked up 109 points, followed by Soldotna with 93 and Chugiak with 50.

For the girls, Service compiled 122.5 points, well ahead of Service with 80 and Lathrop with 62.

Joshua Gemmell, a senior at Soldotna, turned in the meet’s outstanding performance, winning the 100 yard breaststroke in a nation-leading and state record 56.40. The old state mark was 57.36 set in 1998. Gemmell also won the 100 free (46.73) and anchored Soldotna’s winning 400 free relay (3:15.39).

Lucas Peterson, another Soldotna senior, set the only other state mark on the boys’ side, flying through the 100 butterfly in 50.97. The old mark, set five years ago, was 51.73. Peterson matched his teammate’s double wins, as he also took the 100 back (53.89)and swam on the victorious 400 free relay.

Chugiak’s Logan Tucker was the third double winner, taking both the 200 (1:44.21) and 500 free (4:45.36).

Only one state record was set in the girls’ competition. Service sophomore Brette Winegarner stroked the 100 back in 58.86, erasing the 1992 mark of 59.28.

Rachelle Kula, a junior at Service, was one of two girls to chalk up twin wins. Kula took the 200 IM in 2:09.75 and the 100 fly in 56.85.

Bryn Spores, a junior at Lathrop, was the other double winner, annexing both the 50 (24.20) and 100 free (53.03).
