Crescent Valley Girls, Springfield Boys Named Oregon 5A State Champions

The 2019 Oregon 5A State Swimming Championships took place on Saturday, Feb. 16 at the Tualatin Aquatics Center in Beaverton, Ore.

Crescent Valley won their first girls’ team title since 2011, finishing the meet with 79 points ahead of West Albany (49) and North Bend (41). Springfield earned the championship crown on the boys’ side after totaling 53 points ahead of West Albany (48) and North Bend (44).

Crescent Valley began their winning ways as the 4×50 medley relay squad of M’Kenzie Drill (29.19), Sarah Cordier (30.92), Francesca Criscione (26.56) and Paula Lomonaco (24.336) opened up the meet in 1:51.03.

Shortly after helping her medley relay to the gold, Lomonaco was back in the water to claim a personal victory in the 200 free. She was the only swimmer in the field under the two-minute mark, doing so in 1:56.15. She also led the charge in the 100 free, racing to first in 53.62.

After leading off the victorious medley relay, Cordier was quickly back in the pool to win the 200 IM in a final time of 2:10.57. Churchill freshman Kylie Taylor was the first of two swimmers in the field under 60 seconds in the 100 back, reaching the wall in 57.42 ahead of Dickerson (58.54). Wilsonville’s Abby Moaz got her hands to the wall first in the 100 breast with a time of 1:04.29.

Criscione also added a pair of individual wins later on in the meet. She first won the 100 fly, racing to the top of the podium in 57.98. She also earned the 5A state title in the 500 free, cruising to first 5:02.47 to win by 10 seconds.

West Albany’s Bailey Dickerson splashed-and-dashed her way to the wall in 25.19 to grab the 50 free title. Dickerson than anchored the winning 4×50 free relay in 23.93, joining teammates Allie Bates (26.61), Natalie Baas (26.66) and Taylor Kelley (25.74) to post a combined time of 1:42.94.

North Bend’s Annika Strasman (58.26), Helen Witharm (59.34), Natalie Cheal (54.65) and Bella Jones (54.35) concluded the girls’ meet by winning the 4×100 free relay in 1:46.60, only .03 ahead of second-place finisher Crescent Valley (3:46.63).

Boys Meet

Springfield began the boys’ meet with a 4×50 medley relay victory as the team of Ian Kerr (26.56), Diego Reyes (26.55), Elijah Dapkus (23.84) and Nathaniel Gordy (23.80) combined to win in 1:40.75.

Dapkus later went on to win the 100 free in 48.36, getting his hand to the wall on slightly faster than Ashland’s Chris Frownfelt who placed second in a close 48.42. Reyes also won the 100 breast, getting his hands to the wall first in 57.07.

It was a tight battle in the 200 free as West Albany’s Kieran Van Horsen (1:48.62) narrowly out-touched runner-up Nico Barbafiera (1:48.63) by .01. Pendleton’s Ryan Barnard was the first of only two swimmers in the field under the two-minute mark in the 200 IM, winning in 1:57.93 ahead of Corvallis’ Nic Ashland (1:59.39).

Churchill freshman Charley Page-Jones sprinted to first place in the 50 free, stopping the clock in 21.60. Shortly after, he was back in the pool to add another gold to his hardware by taking first in the 100 fly with a time of 50.98.

Crater freshman Marcus Reyes-Gentry dominated the 500 free, posting a 15-second victory in a final time of 4:42.70 for the first state title of his career. His second title came in the 100 back, where he powered home to win by nearly three seconds in 51.76.

West Albany’s Eric Formiller (22.74), Gabe Ayala (22.88), Luke Milburn (22.87) and Van Horsen (21.72) won the 4×50 free relay in 1:30.21. They also ended the meet with a win in the 4×100 free relay as Braxton Reece (50.22), Dylan Hayes (51.03), Milburn (49.99) and Van Horsen (48.15) finished in 3:19.39.
