Comparing Division III Mid-Season Rankings with 2018 NCAA Invited Times

Mid-Season invitationals are over, and most teams have swum a meet with some level of rest and a tech suit. The current national rankings start to give some insight into what it might take to qualify for Division III NCAAs this year.

Times will drop again in February, and the depth of quick swims should become more significant in most events. In the rankings right now, the notable absence is the NESCAC conference. Swimming on a shorter season, few of these teams put much rest into a mid-season meet that falls only a few weeks into their season.

Historically, many of the top teams have rested enough in December that their top swimmers will compete in their conference meet on limited rest, having already secured a likely NCAA qualification time. Consequently, many times near the top likely won’t get much faster.

Here’s a look at the 2018 NCAA Invited time, compared to the current equally ranked time in Division III (according to USA Swimming’s official database). For the women, last year 20 relays were invited to NCAAs and 22 women were taken in most individual events (a few only had 21), so the chart shows the current 20th (relays) and 22nd (individual events) ranked time in the country. For the men, 16 individuals and relays were taken in most events, with only 15 in a few. The chart shows the 16th fastest time in Division III right now.
