Coleen Gillilan, Meredith Rees Claim Double Victories as Fairview Wins State Title at Colorado 5A Meet

The 2019 Colorado Girls 5A State Championships took place on February 9 at the Veterans Memorial Aquatic Center (VMAC) in Thornton, Colo.

Fossil Ridge’s Coleen Gillilan and Lewis-Palmer’s Meredith Rees each won two gold medals this weekend. Despite only winning three events, Fairview used impressive depth to secure the team championship crown for the third time in program history with a final score of 495.5. They dethroned defending champion Fossil Ridge (378) as Regis Jesuit (371.5) took third.

Fairview’s 4×50 medley relay of Riley Tapley (25.83), Emma Weber (28.14), Jenna Reznieck (24.43) and Morgan Lukinac (23.26) began the meet by winning gold with a time of 1:41.66. Last year’s winner of the event, Fossil Ridge, earned a spot on the podium in second place with a time of 1:42.22 while Regis Jesuit touched for third at 1:43.12.

C. Gillilan, a Notre Dame commit, successfully defended her state title in the 200 free with a time of 1:47.61. Chatfield’s Kathryn Shanley just barely broke the 1:50-marker with a time of 1:49.99 to secure the silver medal while Fairview’s Mikayla Seigal achieved the bronze with a time of 1:51.09.

Bell won the state title in the 200 IM with a time of 2:00.06, four seconds in front of Cherry Creek’s Jenna Smith (2:04.36) and Fairview’s Amelie Lessing (2:04.74). Bell’s teammate, Caraline Baker, also fell into the 2:04-zone for a fourth-place finish of 2:04.74.

Rees, who is off to Missouri, splashed-and-dashed into first place in the 50 free with a quick 23.16. Rocky Mountain’s Meredith Smithbaker and Heritage’s Anna Shaw dueled for a spot on the podium, finishing just .01 seconds away from each other with times of 23.21 and 23.22, respectively.

Shaw also placed third in the 100 freestyle with a time of 50.78, after champion Jada Surrell-Norwood (50.59) of Regis Jesuit and runner-up Lindsay Stenstrom of Valor Christian.

Fossil Ridge freshman Renee Gillilan flew to the top of the podium in the 100 fly with a fast 52.95 while her teammate, Lucy Bell, finished second in 53.64. Seigal again took third in 54.97.

Arapahoe’s Franny Cable dove to first on the 1-meter board with a final score of 562.10. Cable’s teammate, Kirsten Belitz, followed her with a score of 511.40 for second while Izzy Gregersen of Ralston Valley placed third with 505.70 points.

C. Gillilan won her second individual gold medal of the meet in the 500 free, stopping the clock in 4:56.05. Just like the 200 free, Shanley followed closely behind for a second-place finish of 4:58.23. Brook Ford of Mountain Vista joined the duo on the podium with a bronze medal and time of 5:04.45.

Fairview’s win in the 4×50 medley relay was mimicked in their 4×50 freestyle relay, with Reznicek (24.21), Weber (23.90), Lukinac (23.19) and Seigal (23.11) combining in 1:34.41 to add another medal to their collection. Arapahoe (1:35.44) and Regis Jesuit (1:35.48) finished second and third, respectively.

50 freestyle champion Rees gained another victory in the 100 back with a time of 53.71. R. Gillilan followed closely by .05 seconds behind with a second-place finish in 53.76, while Tapley earned bronze in 55.65.

After guiding her team to a pair of relay victories, Weber’s first personal win of the night was earned in the 100 breast with a time of 1:02.04, followed by Sophia Bradac of Regis Jesuit finishing second in 1:02.38. Holley Dennis of Mountain Vista placed third in 1:03.05.

Fossil Ridge’s 4×100 free relay team of R. Gillilan (51.21), Mahala Erlandson (53.05), Bell (50.47), and C. Gillilan (48.93) came out on top in 3:23.66. Fairview (3:26.56) and Regis Jesuit (3:27.29) completed the podium’s top three teams.

Bell who won the 200 IM is Lucy Bell who swims for Fossil Ridge. She is also a freshman.
