Fourteen-year-old Claire Curzan set a new girls’ 13-14 National Age Group record in the 100 fly at the North Carolina 4A State Championships.

A freshman at Cardinal Gibbons, her time of 51.60 broke the old NAG mark of 51.73 set by Regan Smith in 2016. Only a high school freshman, that time would currently rank tenth in the NCAA so far this season.

Curzan’s time eclipsed the National Public High School record of 51.62 set by Beata Nelson in 2015, but Cardinal Gibbons is a private school. Curzan was just shy of Katie McLaughlin’s Independent record of 51.51, and she crushed Alyssa Marsh’s North Carolina State mark of 53.23.

Curzan does her club swimming with TAC Titans and most recently won the 100 fly and 200 back at Juniors East in December. She also holds the girls’ 13-14 NAG record in the 4×50 medley relay, as well as the girl’s 11-12 NAG record in the 50 fly, 50m fly and 100 fly.

I can only imagine what it feels like to move through the water that fast.
She has to be careful at the walls.
