Christ Church Girls, St. Joseph’s Boys Win South Carolina 3A State Titles

SCHSL action continued with the 3A State Championships taking place on October 6 at the University of South Carolina’s natatorium. Christ Church won a close girls’ team race while St. Joseph’s repeated as boys’ team champion.

Girls Meet

Christ Church’s Diana Geary, Kailee Morgan, Nele Stroebel and Mollie Folk opened the meet with a win in the 4×50 medley relay, stopping the clock in 1:52.82. Folk, Stroebel, Claire DePiero and Alexandra Katz also wrapped up the down-to-the-wire meet with a 4×100 free relay win in 3:39.83.

Powdersville’s Keri Golden won the 200 free in 1:55.11, only two-tenths ahead of runner-up Emma Sullivan (1:55.36) of Waccammaw. Oceanside freshman Kendal Chunn dominated the 200 IM, placing first in 2:08.45 ahead of Golden (2:12.47). Sullivan found herself on top of the podium in the 500 free and Chunn earned the 100 back gold (59.06).

Freshman Alora Orr of May River sprinted her way to a 3A title in the 50 free with a quick 24.35. Academic Magnet’s Skyler Ayers was second in 24.91 and then went on to win the 100 free in 54.20 ahead of Folk (54.86). Morgan gave Christ Church another win in the 100 breast (1:05.54).

Another freshman made a statement at this meet as Jill Smiley (58.05) cruised to first in the 100 fly ahead of Oceanside’s Chrisman Rand (58.40). Rand, along with Chunn, Cara Johnson and Sophia McCoy, gave Oceanside a 4×50 free relay victory in 1:41.87.

Boys Meet

St. Joseph’s started their title quest right from the get-to as Jack Doyle, Silas Crosby, Liam Walker and Preston Jennings opened the boys meet with a win in the 4×50 medley relay (1:37.13). The quartet also concluded the meet with a win in the 4×100 free relay (3:17.78).

Crosby came out on top of a very tight 200 free race, stopping the clock in 1:44.55 to finish just ahead of CCH Nathan DePiero (1:44.64). Crosby again found himself with the gold in the 500 free (4:46.66).

Walker cruised to a 200 IM victory in 1:53.42 to finish three seconds ahead of May River’s Clayton Boyles (1:56.89). Walker also earned the title in the 100 fly (50.53) and Boyles won the 100 breast (59.19). Christ Church’s Alex DiBattista also snuck under the one-minute mark in the to take second in 59.63.

Bishop England’s Addie Laurencelle, who is headed off to Cal next fall, sprinted to a first-place finish in the 50 free (20.79) to defend his title and was 0.08 seconds off the 3A title. Laurencelle also repeated as 100 free champion (46.08) and combined with Josh Adams, Noland Griffith and Ethan Griffith to win the 4×50 free relay (1:30.25). Soon after, N. Griffith powered his way home to a 100 back 3A title (53.86).
